Mississippi Braves News Release

Jacksonville, FL - Cedric Hunter's two-run triple in the eighth inning gave the Mississippi Braves a lead they never relinquished, taking the series finale with the Jacksonville Suns 4-3 on Sunday evening at Bragan Field.

The win pulled the M-Braves (29-21; 68-51) to just one game back in the Southern League South Division race, completing a series in which the Braves took four of five.

Trailing 3-2 entering the eighth, Mycal Jones and Kyle Kubitza drew back-to-back walks to start the inning and Hunter ripped a ball on the fly to straightaway centerfield. Joe Benson lost it in the lights as it bounced behind him on the warning track, and both runners scored for a 4-3 lead.

Hunter was thrown out at the plate in his bid for an inside-the-park home run for the first out of the inning, but the Braves held on for the win.

The M-Braves and Suns (30-20; 66-54) swapped runs in the first inning. Kyle Wren led off the game with a triple and Jones laid down a safety squeeze bunt for a 1-0 lead.

Jacksonville came back in the bottom half with a one-out double for Austin Barnes. JT Realmuto singled to put men at the corners, and with Brady Shoemaker at the plate Realmuto took off for second. Braeden Schlehuber's throw went into center and allowed an unearned run to tie the game 1-1.

The Suns took a lead in the third on another unearned run. Austin Nola reached on a one-out error at third, Barnes was hit by a pitch and Realmuto and Shoemaker hit back-to-back singles to load the bases and score a run for a 2-1 lead.

Mississippi came back to tie the game in the fourth. Kubitza drew a leadoff walk and Barrett Kleinknecht grounded one hard to third off the glove of Barnes, another error that allowed an unearned run to score for a 2-2 game.

Mitch Atkins took a no-decision in the start for the Braves, throwing six innings for two unearned runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked two.

Brandon Cunniff (3-0) picked up the win, allowing just a run on one hit over two innings. John Cornely earned his fifth save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Suns broke the 2-2 tie when relief pitcher Matt Ramsey homered to right field on a line drive, his first professional homer in his third career at-bat. The solo shot made it 3-2, setting up the M-Braves' comeback.

Ramsey (3-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits over two innings. Starter Dustin Mosely took a no-decision, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits over six frames, striking out two and walking one.

Now the M-Braves return home to try to continue their surge to the top of the South division, squaring off with the Montgomery Biscuits in a five-game set beginning Tuesday night at 7:00 PM CT at Trustmark Park. Right-hander Jason Hursh (10-6, 3.42) takes the mound for the M-Braves in the opener.
