Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN, NB --- The Saint John Sea Dogs earned a split in their two-game season series with the Montreal Juniors on Sunday afternoon, defeating the TELUS West Division's second-place team by a score of 5-2 in front of 3,112 fans at Harbour Station.

Jonathan Huberdeau (2), Zack Phillips, Stephen MacAulay, and Tomas Jurco all scored for the Sea Dogs in Sunday's impressive home win, with Steven Anthony dishing out a pair of highlight-reel assists in picking up First Star of the Game honours. Veteran goalie Frédéric Piché picked up the third win of his season in net for Saint John, making 34 saves on 36 shots faced.

At the other end of the ice, L.A. Kings prospect J-F Bérubé suffered the loss between the pipes for the Juniors after surrendering five goals on 18 shots faced. Montreal's offence, meanwhile, came courtesy of Louis Leblanc and Francis Meilleur.

Saint John finished the day with two power play goals on four opportunities, while Montreal went 1-for-4 on the man advantage. Saint John is now 5-0-0-0 on home ice this season and 7-2-0-1 overall.

The Juniors took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of play when Montreal Canadiens prospect Louis Leblanc banged home a rebound produced by a Francis Meilleur point shot to make the fourth goal of his season of the power play variety. Meilleur and Philippe Lefebvre both drew helpers on Leblanc's man-up marker.

Saint John tied things up at one apiece at the 14:35 mark of the opening frame when second-year forward Jonathan Huberdeau beat Bérubé in transition to pick up his seventh goal of the year. St. Louis Blues prospect Stephen MacAulay then gave the hosts a 2-1 lead on a beauty of a wraparound late in the stanza.

An unassisted marker off the stick of Francis Meilleur made the score 2-2 midway through the second period, but Saint John retook the lead a moment later compliments of a Gretzky-like, behind-the-net backhand pass from Vancouver Canucks prospect Steven Anthony. A crease-hovering Zack Phillips deposited the spectacular feed across Montreal's goal line with tremendous rapidity to improve his 2010-11 goals total to six.

Slovakian sniper Tomas Jurco gave the hosts an insurance goal at the 17:37 mark of the middle frame, knocking home his own rebound during a Saint John power play to pick up the ninth tally of his sophomore season. A bullet of a wrist shot by offensive wizard Jonathan Huberdeau then put the Sea Dogs up by a field goal in the final minute of period number two.

Neither team managed to find the back of the net during a chance-heavy third period, with Saint John ultimately taking the decision by three goals.

Up next for the Port City's major junior squad is a Tuesday night showdown (puck drop: 7pm) with the Rimouski Oceanic at Harbour Station (www.harbourstation.ca). Designated 'Toonie Tuesday', special $2 youth tickets are available for this game with the purchase of an adult seat.
