Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI (March 13, 2005) - The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Milwaukee Wave forward, Greg Howes, has been named the league's Offensive Player of the Week. Howes, the MISL's Offensive Player of the Month in January, wins the award for the third time this season.
The Tacoma, Washington, native came up big for the Wave on the day that fans received a Greg Howes bobble-head at the U.S. Cellular Arena. He was involved in five of the six Wave goals in a 6-5 overtime win over the Baltimore Blast that put Milwaukee back in second place. Howes rallied Milwaukee from a 2-0 deficit by recording a natural hat-trick between the second and third quarters. With the game tied through three quarters, Howes scored his fourth goal of the game at 3:24 of the fourth quarter to give the Wave a 5-4 lead. When the game went to overtime, Howes found Angel Rivillo at 2:14 of the extra period for the game-winner to cap his five point afternoon.
The 2005-06 season is Howes' sixth in the MISL (all with the Wave). He has led the squad in scoring each year since the 2002-03 season and he currently has a six point edge (57 points) over his competition in the MISL scoring chase. Howes is tied for the league lead with 32 goals and is second with 25 assists. On the season, the 28-year-old forward has averaged 2.59 points per game, better than the averages of his previous two MVP seasons.
Howes came to the Wave out of Oregon State University for the 2000-01 season. In his six seasons with Milwaukee, he has already put his name among the franchise leaders in goals, assists, points and games played. Howes was a member of Milwaukee Wave championship squads in 2000-01 (his rookie year) and last season (2004-05).
The MISL also named the Goalkeeper and Defensive Players of the Week on Monday. The St. Louis Steamers Brett Phillips took home the Goalkeeper of the Week honors for stopping 80 percent of the shots he faced and allowing two goals in a 5-2 victory over Philadelphia. Antonio Sutton of the California Cougars was the Defensive Player of the week after he blocked three shots in helping the team to a third consecutive win.
The Wave hosts the Chicago Storm on Friday (March 17) and the Philadelphia KiXX on Sunday (March 19). The games are a part of the Reality All-Stars Soccer Festival featuring Ethan Zohn and other "castaways." Weekend events include a green jersey auction on Friday, a charity dinner on Saturday, a Wave Legends and Reality All-Stars post-game and Keith Tozer bobble-head on Sunday.
