Howell Flirts with a Cycle as Missions Even up Series against Soddies

SAN ANTONIO - After dropping game one of the series on Tuesday night, the Missions offense came out strong on Wednesday night. San Antonio scored in each of the first three innings and it was capped off by a four-run third inning. Connor Kaiser and Korry Howell, in their first game back off the Covid List, both went yard. For Howell, he finished the night a triple shy of the cycle. The Missions bounced back with a 7-2 victory.

Jason Blanchard was the starting pitcher for the San Antonio Missions. He received help from his defense to pitch out of a jam in the top of the first inning. Blanchard allowed a lead-off walk to Corbin Carroll and a single to Jorge Barrosa. The southpaw struck out the next two batters before allowing a single to Blaze Alexander. Alexander hit a grounder to right field and Carroll rounded third on the attempt to score. Right-fielder Thomas Milone threw out Carroll at the plate to end the inning.

Bryce Jarvis was the starting pitcher for the Amarillo Sod Poodles and came in as the number seven prospect in the Diamondbacks' organization. The Missions offense took an early lead off Jarvis in the bottom of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Korry Howell hit a single to right field. A wild pitch moved Howell to second base and a single from Domingo Leyba moved him to third base. Howell came around to score on a throwing error from Amarillo catcher Nick Dalesandro. The Missions took a 1-0 lead.

San Antonio improved their lead in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs in the inning, Connor Kaiser lifted a fly ball over the left field wall for a solo home run. Kaiser, who was reinstated from the Covid List prior to the game, hit his third long ball of the season.

Amarillo plated their first run of the game in the top of the third inning. After recording the first out of the inning, Blanchard allowed a solo home run Barrosa. His sixth long ball of the season made it a 2-1 Missions lead.

The Missions scored for the third consecutive inning and plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Korry Howell connected on a solo home run. Leyba followed that with a double and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. After a walk to Yorman Rodriguez, Leyba scored on a second wild pitch from Jarvis. Tirso Ornelas drove in Rodriguez with a double to left field. The fourth run of the inning scored when Juan Fernandez singled to center field. The Missions improved their lead to 6-1.

Blanchard finished the night with one run allowed on four hits with six strikeouts in four innings of work. Carlos Belen recorded the win after allowing one run across two innings of work.

Amarillo added their second run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Facing Belen, Alexander was hit by a pitch with two outs in the inning. After a single from Jancarlos Cintron, Ti'Quan Forbes drove in Alexander with a single to right field. The Missions still held a 6-2 advantage.

San Antonio plated their seventh run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Facing Yorvin Pantoja, Howell hit a double to left field. For Howell, he finished the night a triple shy of the cycle. Leyba grounded out and advanced Howell to third base. Rodriguez drove in Howell with a sacrifice fly. San Antonio improved their lead to 7-2.

The San Antonio Missions will continue their six-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Thursday, June 16th. Right-hander Lake Bachar (0-1, 5.09) is scheduled to pitch for the Missions. Right-hander Deyni Olivero (0-4, 8.36) is scheduled to pitch for the Amarillo Sod Poodles. First pitch is expected for 7:05 p.m.
