DASH HOST KANSAS CITY FOR THE FINAL INSTALLMENT OF 2023 DERBY-Q
The Dash continues their pursuit to return to the NWSL Playoffs with a match against the Kansas City Current on Saturday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m. CT at Shell Energy Stadium.
Houston enters the match following a 1-1 draw with the Washington Spirit. The Dash were trailing late in the match after conceding a goal in the 63rd minute of the game. Forward María Sánchez scored the equalizer in the first minute of second-half stoppage time to give Houston a crucial point. Forward Ebony Salmon began the play on the right side of the field, the 22-year-old crossed the ball into the box for Sánchez who was waiting at the near post. The Mexican international then hit the ball with her knee past Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury, who finished with eight saves.
In the 58th minute Dash forward Nichelle Prince made her season debut as a second-half substitute. Prince, who had been sidelined for the majority of the season due to ruptured Achilles tendon suffered at the end of 2022, came into the match and instantly made an impact. In 32 minutes of play, Prince created two scoring chances. Prince first returned to the field at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup for the Canadian Women's National Team as a substitute in the opening match of the group stage against Nigeria.
Kansas City travels to Houston for the final meeting between the two teams for the 2023 regular season. The Dash and Current have met three times already this year, once in the regular season and twice in the 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup. Houston beat Kansas City in the first regular season meeting on May 26 after forward Diana Ordóñez and defender Ally Prisock scored to give the Dash the victory.
The Current enter the game following a 1-0 win over OL Reign at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. Forward Cece Kizer scored the lone goal of the game in the 61st minute to give the home team the win in the first regular season match since the World Cup began.
Houston will celebrate Inspiring Women's Night on Saturday evening. Players will wear special warm up tops which highlight women that have made a positive impact in their lives. Prior to the match, VOICEINSPORT founder and CEO Stef Strack will join the Houston Dash for a pre-match networking event in the East Club.
The Dash will travel to the West Coast for the last time this season to take on San Diego Wave FC on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m. CT.
DYNAMO SHIFT FOCUS TO LEAGUE PLAY AND PLAYOFF PUSH
The Dynamo return to league play on Saturday after advancing to the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake at Shell Energy Stadium. Both teams will meet again on Saturday in Utah as both squads look to earn key points in the final stretch of the regular season.
The Dynamo enter the match in sixth place in the Western Conference and face a Salt Lake squad that currently sits in third. This is the third meeting of the year between the two sides and the first meeting finished in a scoreless draw in Houston on May 6. That was one of nine clean sheets the Dynamo have tallied this season.
Wednesday's match required extra time following a 1-1 draw in regulation. Dynamo captain Héctor Herrera scored the opening goal in the final moments of the first half. The visitors equalized in the second half with one of their two shots on target that evening. The Dynamo would secure their berth in the Open Cup final early in the first period of extra time with a long-range effort from midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla. Midfielder Luis Caicedo scored the final goal of the match to give the Dynamo a 3-1 lead and ensure their first appearance in a final since the 2018 edition of the Open Cup.
Real Salt Lake returns to league play following Wednesday's loss and reaching the Round of 16 in the 2023 Leagues Cup. Salt Lake defeated Seattle Sounders FC in the group stage and eliminated Club Leon in the Round of 32. Salt Lake's run in the Leagues Cup came to an end in the Round of 16 against LAFC. The team is currently unbeaten in their last nine league games with a 6-0-3 record since a 3-2 loss at home to the LA Galaxy on May 31.
Saturday's match is the third of a five-game stretch across a two-week span. League play will pause after the first weekend in September for the FIFA break. The five-game stretch will continue on Wednesday, Aug. 30 against the Columbus Crew at Shell Energy Stadium.
DYNAMO 2 FACE LA GALAXY II FOR FIRST TIME IN 2023
Dynamo Dos returns to SaberCat Stadium to host LA Galaxy II for the first time this year on Sunday, August 27 at 6:00 p.m. CT.
Dynamo 2 returns to the Space City following a 4-3 loss at PayPal Park against San Jose Earthquakes II on Saturday, August 19. Midfielder Diego Gonzalez scored this ninth goal of the season and the equalizer in the 19th minute after San Jose II took the early lead seven minutes prior. Defender Talen Maples added two more goals in the 30th and 44th minutes respectively for his first multi-goal game of the 2023 season.
Midfielder Brooklyn Raines returned to the lineup after exiting in the first half of the match against Colorado Rapids 2 on August 9. Raines was involved in the scoring play that led to Maples' goal in the 44th minute. Raines played 71 minutes, winning 64.3 percent of the duels he was involved in.
LA Galaxy II currently sits in 13th place in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference standings. The Carson, Calif. Based team has a 4-13-6 (WLD) overall record and is coming off a 0-0 regulation draw against Real Monarchs. Galaxy II earned the extra point after winning the penalty shootout 10 to 9. Forward Aaron Bibout leads Galaxy II in scoring this season with 10 goals and has started every game this season.
Dynamo Dos will host St. Louis CITY 2 at 5:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 3 at SaberCats Stadium. The match will be available on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+.
Here are three key points ahead of the three fixtures:
DASH FACE FAMILIAR FOE: Saturday's match up will be the fourth time this year that Houston and Kansas City will meet. Thanks to the grouping of the 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup, both teams faced each another two additional times. In 2022, the two teams met five times, twice in Challenge Cup, twice in the regular season, and once in the playoffs.
BASSI BONANZA: Houston has scored eight goals in its last two matches, winning 5-0 over the Portland Timbers in the MLS restart on Sunday and 3-1 (ET) in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinal versus Real Salt Lake on Wednesday. In those two matches, eight different players scored a goal, seven of which were assisted. Forward Amine Bassi stands out in that stretch, converting a penalty kick versus Portland and assisting on all three of Houston's goals versus Real Salt Lake. The 25-year-old also created a team-leading nine chances in the RSL match. The 25-year-old became the fourth Dynamo player to record three assists in a single match for the team and the first since midfielder Alex in a 3-1 victory at D.C. United on July 22, 2017.
DYNAMO 2 GOING FOR LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN: Houston Dynamo 2 has won six matches at SaberCats Stadium this season. Dynamo 2 has scored 19 goals on home soil including four multi-goal games. Dynamo Dos are led by forward Papa NDoye who has scored eleven goals this season and Dynamo Academy product Diego Gonzalez adds nine more goals this campaign.
