An opening goal gave the Portland Thorns a 1-0 victory over theÃÂ Houston DashÃÂ at BBVA Stadium this evening.ÃÂ
PortlandÃÂ got on the board in the opening minute afterÃÂ Thorns forward Sophia SmithÃÂ dribbledÃÂ pastÃÂ defenderÃÂ Katie NaughtonÃÂ andÃÂ poked the ball intoÃÂ the back of the net.ÃÂ ÃÂ
DashÃÂ forwardÃÂ Veronica LatskoÃÂ and defenderÃÂ Jamia FieldsÃÂ led the charge for Houston in the next four minutes. First, with a dangerous cross from Fields into the heart of the boxÃÂ in the third minute. A few minutes laterÃÂ Latsko just missed aÃÂ through ballÃÂ inside the box.ÃÂ
Houston continued to press throughout the first half,ÃÂ findingÃÂ opportunities in Portland's box. In the 33rdÃÂ minute, Naughton forced aÃÂ corner kick.ÃÂ Houston midfielderÃÂ Emily OgleÃÂ served the ball into the box to find midfielderÃÂ Gabby SeilerÃÂ who headed the ballÃÂ inches wide ofÃÂ the goal.ÃÂ
The Thorns almost doubled their lead in the 55thÃÂ after SmithÃÂ tested her luckÃÂ from the top of theÃÂ box, missing just wide of theÃÂ right side of the goal.ÃÂ
HoustonÃÂ will hostÃÂ NJ/NY Gotham FCÃÂ visit BBVA StadiumÃÂ next weekÃÂ for the first time this regular season. Kickoff is set forÃÂ 6:00 p.m. CTÃÂ on Aug. 1ÃÂ and fans can follow the action on Paramount+ and Twitch internationally.
