Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Midland, Mich. - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) offense came alive in the later innings, as they scored one in the eighth and three more in the ninth to seal a 5-2 win over the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers). Bowling Green out-hit the Loons on Saturday night, 11-4.
Blake Snell hurled five shutout innings, and left with a 1-0 lead. He received a no-decision after the Loons plated a run in the sixth, but he struck out four batters and conceded only a pair of hits. The scoreless effort lowered his season earned run average to just 2.16.
Snell took the mound with the lead after the Hot Rods scored a run with two outs in the first. Ariel Soriano reached on an infield single, and then scored all the way from first base when Granden Goetzman doubled to left field.
With Snell out of the ballgame, Great Lakes tied the game in the eighth. With the bases clear and one out, Paul Hoenecke hit a home run over the right field fence to even the contest at one.
The bats remained quiet until he eighth inning when Bowling Green re-captured the lead. Yoel Araujo led off with a sharp single up the middle, and then was bunted over to second base by Alexander Simon. Darryl George put the Hot Rods in front when he smashed a double to left field.
Three runs came across in the ninth to help break open the game. Goetzman started the rally with his third hit of the game, and he was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Darryl George. Oscar Hernandez drove him home with a single, and Hernandez moved to second on the throw home. The Loons elected to intentionally walk Pat Blair, and one out later, Alexander Simon singled up the middle to drive home both Hernandez and Blair to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Loons would add one run in the ninth, but it would not be a major factor in the 5-2 Bowling Green win. Jorge Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win after tossing three innings out of the bullpen.
Michael Johnson (1-2) allowed all four runs in the eighth and ninth innings for the Loons, and he received the loss.
