Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Seventh Heaven... A pair of homers and a five-run seventh inning helped the Hot Rods clinch their second and final three-game set of the year in a 7-1 win over Asheville. Alika Williams, Kyle Manzardo, and Alexander Ovalles had three hits each, including a 3-3 day with a homer from Ovalles. Anthony Molina earned his league-best ninth win in his first start this season, striking out three in 5.0 frames. The Hot Rods bullpen didn't allow a run, with three shut- out innings from Victor Muñoz and a scoreless ninth with a strikeout by Evan Reifert.
Yesterday's Notes... Simon's homer gave him 50 RBIs on the season... He is eighth in the SAL in that category... Simon is also tied for fifth in the league with 15 homers... Ovalles was perfect from the plate, going 3-3 with a walk and finishing a triple short of the cycle... The Hot Rods have hit five home runs in the two games since the All-Star Break ... Hernandez and Auer extended their hit streaks to four-straight games... Auer's streak has included an extra-base hit in all four... Molina earned a win in his first start of the season... He is tied for the league-lead with nine wins in 2022...
Picking up Where They Left Off... For the first time since the season-opening series, Bowling Green will host the Asheville Tourists in a three-game set at Bowling Green Ballpark. Though Asheville won the last series 3-2, the Hot Rods began the 2022 season by sweeping the Astros Affiliate. BG won the first two games by over seven runs and tossed a 1-0 shutout to finish off the sweep in the opening series. The Hot Rods won the first game of the most recent series in Asheville, but the Tourists responded with 34 runs over the next three games, all wins before rain claimed what would have been a second game of a Saturday doubleheader.
Clinched!... BG finished the first half leading their division for the third time in club history, clinching a playoff spot with 2018's Mid- west League Champions and again in 2011. (there were no halves in 2021). The 2011 team finished the first leg of the season with a 41-29 record while the 2018 Hot Rods set a franchise record with 47 wins in the first half and a record of 47-22. The 2022 club became the third Hot Rods team to the 40-win mark in a half.
Prepared for the Postseason... The 2022 Playoff structure looks a little different than last season's "High-A East" setup. The sea- son is split into two halves, with the first-half ending after games on June 23. Each division's team with the best record will earn a berth, with the divisional first and second half champions facing one an- other in a three-game series in the postseason. The winners of those series will be crowned division champions, with the two remaining teams set to face one another in a three-game championship series. The Hot Rods clinched a playoff spot after winning the South Division in the first half. They will be joined by the first half North Division Winners in the Aberdeen IronBirds.
Among the Leaders... Bowling Green is coming back from the All-Star Break with the fourth-best record in all of High-A, second best in the South Atlantic League. They have had one of the best lineups in the SAL all-season long, and are currently third in all of High-A baseball with a .415 slugging percentage. BG has scored the fourth-most runs in High-A with the fifth-most RBIs and seventh-most home runs. On the mound, they are tied for second in High-A in walks allowed, with the fewest free passes in the SAL at 265. BG is currently the best fielding team in the SAL, with a .979 fielding percentage putting them at third in all of High-A. They have also surrendered the fewest stolen bases in the SAL with 68, third in all of High-A as well.
