Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Four goals in less than a minute highlighted a high-scoring 6-4 Waterloo Black Hawks road win Friday versus the Sioux Falls Stampede at Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The outburst included two goals for each team, after Waterloo brought a 2-0 lead into the second period.
Just 1:53 into the game, the Black Hawks had jumped ahead, as Joe Cassetti displayed his hand-eye coordination. Matej Blumel's shot was stopped but deflected almost straight up. Cassetti used quick reflexes to bat the puck out of the air and past Alec Calvaruso. Cassetti struck again during a power play late in the period. At 14:18, he deflected in Wyatt Schingoethe's shot from the left circle.
Waterloo chased Calvaruso to the bench with a pair of goals separated by 22 seconds in the second. Solag Bakich got the first near the end of a power play at 13:28, capitalizing on a feed from Griffin Ness when the Stampede started to breakout but forgot the puck in the defensive zone. James Marooney recorded the next one from a Patrick Guzzo setup, going forehand, backhand, forehand to strike.
The Stampede then struck for two to make it four goals in 47 seconds. Brian Chambers and Cade Borchardt scored just 12 seconds apart to cut the lead in half. Chambers sliced it to one with Sioux Falls' third of the night, on a power play, putting in a low shot with 23.5 seconds remaining before intermission.
Two more goals in quick sequence came in the third, split between the sides. Blumel slipped a shot along the ice past relief netminder Jaxson Stauber at 8:35. However, Chambers completed his hat trick, knocking in his own rebound - the fourth shot of the sequence - at the other end of the ice on the following shift.
The Stampede could not generate an equalizer during a power play in the latter half of the period, and Blumel sealed the win with an empty net score as 1.8 seconds remained in regulation.
The Hawks reach the mathematical midpoint of the season after Saturday's home game against the Lincoln Stars. The 7:05 matchup is Waterloo's annual Star Wars Night; after the game, movie-themed jerseys will be auctioned, benefitting Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity. The Black Hawks' Family 4 Pack is also available for the game, including four tickets, hot dogs, four sodas, and four chuck-a-pucks for $48. To order, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
