Sioux City Musketeers News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH-The Musketeers kicked off an eight-game road trip against the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday night. Sioux City came into tonight's contest having won their last two, hoping to start their long road swing on a high note. Unfortunately, a bad 2nd period would cost Sioux City as they fell to Youngstown by a final score of 5-3.
For most of the 1st period, the story was the play of Ben Kraws. Kraws made key saves, including an impressive stop on a 2 on 1, to keep the Musketeers from falling behind early. Sioux City would get a big opportunity late in the period when Joey Abate would get called for a hook. A minute and a half later the Phantoms would get caught with too many men on the ice giving the Musketeers a 5 on 3 opportunity. On the ensuing faceoff Parker Ford won the faceoff back to Marcus Kallionkieli who skated to the center of the ice before firing home a wrist shot to give Sioux City a 1-0 lead with just over 20 seconds to play in the 1st.
Things would get ugly for the Musketeers in the 2nd period. Jack Malone would score just 1:46 into the period to tie the game at one and Youngstown hit the gas. They would go on to score four more unanswered goals including 3 goals in a 1:07 stretch. Malone would bookend the period with his third goal of the game at the 18:16 mark to send the Musketeers to the locker room with a 5-1 deficit.
The Musketeers would not roll over in this one, and they fought back with a strong 3rd period. Kallionkieli got his second goal of the game 3:52 into the period to cut the Phantom lead to 5-2. Parker Ford and Luke Johnson had the assists on the goal. It would be Ford bringing the Musketeers within two just under 5 minutes later. Ford was left all alone in front of the net, Jordan Steinmetz found him with a centering pass, and Ford buried his 12th goal of the season.
It looked like Albin Nilsson brought the Musketeers within one. His backhand shot seemed to cross the goal line but was, in the end, called no goal with no video review. The Musketeers would have their chances with the goalie pulled but could not find the two they needed to tie the game. Final score 5-3.
The bright spot for the Musketeers this evening was the work of the powerplay. Sioux City went 3/5 on the powerplay while Youngstown had one powerplay goal of their own. Ben Kraws and Jake Sibell combined for 22 saves while Christian Stoever made 16 saves for the Phantoms.
The Musketeers will be right back at the Covelli Center tomorrow night for game 2/2 against the Phantoms. Puck drop set for 6:05 pm CST.
