Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - Joe Musgrove made another strong start and Hooks hitters handled the finish Wednesday night as Corpus Christi secured the series with a 7-3 victory over the Travelers at Dickey-Stephens Park.
After yielding solo home runs to Sherman Johnson and Anthony Bemboom over the first two innings, Musgrove (4-0) limited Arkansas (23-23, 59-56) to one single and two walks through the next four. He fanned seven on the night, improving his composite record to 12-1.
The Hooks (26-20, 74-42) leveled the score at 2 in the third. Chan-Jong Moon coaxed a lead-off walk from Chris Ellis (5-2) and promptly scored when Leo Heras scorched a double to right-center. Heras advanced to third on the throw home and ultimately scored via a wild pitch. Ellis would need 31 pitches to end the inning as the Hooks sent eight men to the plate but left the bases loaded.
Corpus Christi took the lead in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by A.J. Reed and Jon Kemmer.
Teoscar Hernandez cracked a single off Austin Wood to begin the seventh. Following a Jio Mier sac bunt, Hernandez rambled home when Reed lined a base hit into right for a 4-2 edge.
The Hooks iced the game in the eighth as Heras and Hernandez capitalized on bases-loaded chances with a walk and a single, respectively. The three-run rally made it 7-2 Corpus Christi.
Chris Cotton, who was charged with an unearned tally in the eighth, worked two innings. Vince Velasquez pitched the ninth, striking out the final two batters to cement the triumph.
The Hooks shoot for the sweep Thursday night. Arkansas lefty Sean Newcomb (0-0, 1.64) draws Edison Frias (0-0, 9.0). First pitch 7:10.
