Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Jonathon Fixler finished a double short of the cycle and Fernando Abad was masterful in long relief as Corpus Christi snapped a 16-game losing streak by beating Northwest Arkansas 6-5 at Whataburger Field Sunday night.
By winning for the first time since June 21, the Hooks improved to 1-15 in the second half of Texas League play. Northwest Arkansas fell to 12-4 and has lost two straight.
Abad (1-3) replaced Henry Villar in the fourth. He faced two over the minimum in 4 2/3 shutout innings, allowed three hits and struck out six, including the side in the eighth.
Danny Meszaros retired the final two Naturals for his ninth save in 12 tries.
Fixler singled in the second, tripled two innings later and homered in the sixth.
Northwest Arkansas wasted no time jumping on Villar. Clint Robinson extended his hitting streak to 20 games with an RBI double to left-center. Paulo Orlando's single plated Robinson to make it 2-0.
Corpus Christi immediately cut the lead in half. Jose Vallejo stroked a one-out single and moved to third on a perfectly-executed hit and run with Jon Gaston. Vallejo tallied when Koby Clemens hit into a fielder's choice.
David Cook's lead-off double led to a tie game after two. Jimmy VanOstrand chased Cook home with the Hooks' fourth hit of the night off Mario Santiago.
The first three Naturals reached base via hits during a three-run third. Robinson drove an 0-2 pitch from Villar over the wall in right-center for his 17th home run of 2010. Tim Smith and Anthony Seratelli chipped in with RBIs, Seratelli on a rolling double which split the outfielders in left-center.
Villar retired just short of the 70-pitch mark (68/49 strikes). His start covered 3 2/3 innings. The Dominican right-hander was popped for nine hits.
Santiago went two pitches past the 70 threshold before plucked with one away in the fifth. He gave up seven hits, walked one and fanned three.
Patrick Keating came on to strike out Gaston for the second out, but walked Clemens and yielded a run-scoring double off the fence in left-center to Jhon Florentino. Cook then dropped a well-placed RBI single near the line in shallow right to pull Corpus Christi within one at 5-4.
Keating was the victim of back-to-back homers by Marcos Cabral and Fixler as the Hooks took a 6-5 lead through six.
Jared Wells (4-3) takes the mound for Corpus Christi Monday at 7:05 vs. Chris Dwyer (1-0). Fans enjoy $1 hot dogs and soda from Mrs Baird's.
