Corpus Christi, TX - The Naturals could not hold onto their lead, and the Corpus Christi Hooks came away with the 6-5 victory Sunday night. The win put an end to the Hooks 16-game losing streak.
The Naturals (12-4) were first on the board, as they scored two runs in the top of the first. Johnny Giavotella was the first runner on base when he hit a single to center. With two outs, Clint Robinson scored Giavotella with a double to left. The double extended Robinson's hitting streak to 20 games, which is a new franchise record for the Naturals. Paulo Orlando followed with a single to center, and Robinson came into score giving the Naturals the 2-0 lead.
The Hooks (1-15) came right back with a run in the bottom of the first and second innings. Jose Vallejo got the first hit of the game for the Hooks with a one out single in the first. Jonathan Gaston followed with a base hit of his own, which advanced Vallejo to third. Koby Clemens then hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Vallejo to score.
David Cook led off the second for the Hooks with a double to center field. Cook was able to score on a base hit from James Van Ostrand, and the run tied the game up at two.
The Naturals retook the lead in the top of the third by scoring three runs. Clint Robinson was at it again time by smashing a solo home run to lead off the inning. It was the 17t home run of the season for Robinson. Paulo Orlando and Jamie Romak followed the homer by hitting back-to-back singles. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Tim Smith brought Orlando home when he hit into a force out. Anthony Seratelli then scored Smith from first with a double to center field. The runs put the Naturals up 5-2.
The Hooks fought back by scoring four unanswered runs. After Clemens walked with two outs in the fifth, Jhon Florentino hit a double to left. The double brought Clemens home. Cook then singled, which brought Florentino home, and the Hooks found themselves down just one.
Two more runs in the sixth put the Hooks on top. The Hooks did not have to wait long in the sixth, as they benefited from back-to-back home runs to start the inning. Marcos Cabral led off with his fourth of the season, and Jonathon Fixler followed with his fourth home run of the season.
Down one, the Naturals could not score a tying run, and the Hooks were able to put an end to their losing streak.
