Hooks Shutdown by Bullpen

(Corpus Christi, TX) - Six Arkansas' pitchers combined to shutdown Hooks' hitting to only four hits and one run in a 6-1 win Sunday night.

In his first start of the season, Hooks' starter Blake Allen (0-1) threw four innings giving up one hit, a solo shot to David Gates in the top of the third that gave the Travelers a one run lead.

Fernando Rijo came in relieve in the fifth inning and got into trouble quick. With two outs Rijo gave up a double to Gates, who had the only two hits of the game at the point. Ivan Reyes followed with a two run home run to left field to give Arkansas a three run lead. The home run was the only hit for Reyes in his Arkansas Travelers debut. Howie Kendrick who also made his Arkansas debut went 2 for 5 with an RBI.

The Hooks' first hit came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Charlton Jimerson hit another one of his mammoth home runs to left field. Jimerson took the team lead in home runs with his 9th of the season.

Arkansas would get that run right back after Rijo gave up a single to Tommy Murphy, then walk the next three batters to score Murphy. Monte Mansfield then came in with the bases loaded and struck out Greg Porter and Gates to get out of the inning.

Corpus Christi would only put together three more hits in the game off Arkansas' bullpen. One of the three hits was Jimerson's second hit of the game, a bunt single down the third base line.

In 3.2 innings of work, Mansfield gave up two runs and struck out six. The two runs that Mansfield gave up came in the ninth inning when Porter led off the inning with a homerun onto the berm in right center field. With two outs Mansfield walked Reggie Willits who stole second and third base and was then drove in by Kendrick to give Arkansas the 6-1 lead.

David Austen who tossed two shutout innings picked up his first win of the season improving his record to (1-1). Alex Serrano who finished the eight and ninth got his 5th save of the season.

Allen the starting pitcher for Corpus Christi was the hard luck loser as he picked up his first loss of the season. With the loss the Hooks fell to (14-10, 41-53) and dropped into second place with San Antonio winning their game. Arkansas picked up their record to (11-13, 45-49) on the season.

The Hooks will travel to Midland on Tuesday for a five game series against the RockHounds.
