July 18, 1909...Rankin Johnson, a youngster from Marble Falls, Texas, came within one strike of pitching a no-hitter as he led Galveston to a 2-0 win over Waco. Johnson had a 1-2 count on Waco center fielder Ernest "Mother" Bradley with two down in the ninth inning when Bradley rammed a double to the right field fence. Johnson struck out the next batter to preserve the shutout and the one-hit win. Oddly, Bradley was making his first appearance in Galveston after having been traded to Waco by the Sand Crabs. July 19, 1913...It was a tough day for Galveston as everyone took a beating from the Houston Buffaloes. While Galveston pitchers were giving up 17 hits and seven walks in a 14-0 loss to the Buffs, the defense was making the club's task even more daunting by committing 10 errors. Houston's versatile Dode Criss held the losers to just seven hits while striking out 12. Every Houston batter hit safely in the one-sided contest, including Criss, who batted fifth in the lineup. July 20, 1996...Wichita got three home runs from Larry Sutton, who drove in all of the Wranglers' runs. His efforts were not enough, however, as the Wranglers dropped a 6-4 decision to Arkansas. July 21, 1970...Mike Floyd came within one double of tying the Texas League record for doubles in a single game when he slammed four two-baggers in El Paso's 9-5 win over Arkansas. Floyd's quartet of doubles drove in three of the Sun Kings nine runs. July 22, 1964...Albuquerque scored runs in all but the third inning on the way to a 23-3 pounding of El Paso. The Dukes collected 22 hits in the game, 12 of which were for extra bases. Left fielder Pete Jernigan led the Albuquerque attack with seven RBI. Jernigan, Bill Barrier and Don Williams all had four hits in the win, with each having a double and a home run. July 23, 1986...San Antonio shortstop Lenny Faedo was a perfect 5-for-5 as he led the Dodgers to a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Tulsa. Faedo's two-run homer in the eighth inning was the game winner for San Antonio. July 24, 1930...Waco jumped out to a quick lead over the visiting Wichita Falls Spudders when they scored 11 runs in the first inning. The Cubs had to hold off a determined Wichita Falls comeback attempt, but eventually prevailed in the contest, winning 13-8.
