Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Corpus Christi opened with a win and closed with a bang Monday night, sweeping its doubleheader against the Missions by scores of 5-3 and 15-3 at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
A Tuesday triumph would secure the Hooks' 11th consecutive series victory.
Leo Heras, Tyler White and Conrad Gregor combined to go 11-for-15 with six runs scored and 12 RBIs in the night cap.
Gregor plated two in the first, capping a three-run frame which was marred by a pair of Missions (27-35) errors.
Corpus Christi (43-19) tacked on three more in the second against Casey Kelly (1-4). With two away, three consecutive singles paved the way toward a two-run double by White.
Jon Kemmer opened the third with his seventh home run of the year, a no-doubter to right field putting the Hooks up 7-0.
Corpus Christi batted around and scored three runs in the fifth opposite lefty Brandon Alger. Heras and White accounted for the damage via a double and a single, respectively, capitalizing on three Alger walks. Â
White notched five RBIs in the game, one shy of tying the franchise record. His two-run single in the seventh was followed immediately by Conrad Gregor's towering homer to right field, making the score 15-1.
Mark Appel earned the victory, holding the Missions to a pair of solo home runs over a season-high 6.1 innings. Appel (4-1) fanned six and walked two, throwing 69 of 101 pitches for strikes. The Houston native owns a 2.86 ERA in his last five starts.
Heras' fourth-inning, three-run blast off Elliot Morris was the difference in Monday's opener.
Corpus Christi scored all five runs with two outs.
Kyle Westwood (5-2) won his fourth consecutive appearance, scattering three runs and nine hits over 5.1 innings.
Lefty Chris Cotton retired both batters he faced in the sixth.
With the Hooks up 5-3 in the seventh, Travis Ballew surrendered a lead-off single to Travis Jankowski. Alberth Martinez then sent a deep drive into right field but Heras made a tremendous running catch for the first out. Case McElroy followed with a base hit to center, staging runners at first and second. The Missions attempted a double steal but Pena threw out McElroy sliding into second base. Ballew struck out Hunter Renfroe on a slider in the dirt for his third save.
Tuesday's finale features a Texas League South All-Star pitching matchup. Justin Hancock (5-2, 3.10) goes for the Missions. Corpus Christi counters with Chris Devenski (7-0, 0.65). First pitch 7:05.
