Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Hooks starter Troy Patton did not allow a run or a hit through six innings, and Corpus Christi carried a 1-0 lead into the seventh. The fun ended there, however, as the visiting Wichita Wranglers rallied for three runs in the seventh on the way to a 4-1 win Thursday night at Whataburger Field.

Patton, in his second start of the year, retired the first 11 batters he faced, and allowed just three walks through six innings. He struck out five and did not allow a runner past first base. Unofficially, Patton threw 87 pitches and was lifted in favor of reliever Jeff Wigdahl (0-1).

Two errors sandwiched around a walk loaded the bases for the Wranglers in the top of the seventh. Wichita right fielder Onil Joseph delivered the pivotal hit - a double inside the bag at third that sent two men home for a 2-1 Wranglers lead. Richie Lewis, trying to score from first on the play, was thrown out at home for the first out in the frame. Joseph went to third on that throw, and scored on Mike Stodolka's hard ground ball out to a drawn-in infield to make it a 3-1 game.

Joseph's double was Wichita's only hit through the first seven innings. Wigdahl suffered the loss, charged with three runs, with only one earned, over two innings.

The Wranglers added an insurance tally when designated hitter Craig Brazell led off the ninth with a home run into the batter's eye in center.

Corpus Christi grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on Neil Sellers' RBI single. The Hooks left the bases loaded that inning, however, as Wichita starter Luke Hochevar fanned both Lou Santangelo and Ray Sadler to end the threat.

Reliever Greg Atencio (1-0) picked up the win with 3.2 innings of shutout relief. Jarod Plummer earned his second save, keeping the Hooks off the board over the final inning-and-a-third.

A crowd of 7,907 witnessed Corpus Christi's home opener. The Hooks are now 0-3 in home openers since christening Whataburger Field in 2005.

The two clubs battle again Friday night at 7:05. RHP Josh Miller toes the rubber for the Hooks, while LHP Daniel Christensen counters for the Wranglers.
