Springfield Cardinals News Release

Despite a huge night from Joe Mather, the Springfield Cardinals dropped their Home Opener on Thursday night, losing to the Midland RockHounds by a score of 4-3 in front of a sold-out Hammons Field crowd.

Mather homered twice and drove in all three Springfield runs, but it was the home run by Midland's Richie Robnett that ended up being the game-winner.

With the Cards up 3-2 in the eighth, Cards' reliever Hugo Castellanos (0-1) gave up a lead-off single to Jason Perry. Robnett followed Perry's hit with a blast over the right-center field wall, giving Midland a 4-3 lead.

That lead held up, as Springfield's offense couldn't touch Jeff Gray, who retired all six men he faced over two scoreless innings. With Mather at the plate and two outs in the ninth, the Midland reliever got Mather to ground out to third base, giving Gray his first save of the year.

Cards' starter Chris Lambert gave up a run in the first inning, but watched Mather connect in the fourth for his first of two homers on the night, giving Springfield a 2-1 lead.

Lambert gave up an unearned run in the fifth, as Jeff Baisley reached on an error and scored on Perry's second of three hits, tying the game at 2-2. The Cardinals' starter didn't get out of the fifth, pitching four and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs, but just one earned.

Mather untied the game with his fourth homer of the year, crushing a seventh-inning pitch by eventual winner Andy Shipman (1-0) over the wall in center field for a 3-2 Springfield lead.

Springfield falls to 2-4 with the loss, while Midland improves to 5-1. Mitchell Boggs (0-1) will throw for Springfield on Friday night, while Midland sends Brad Knox (0-0) to the hill. Friday night is another AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks Extravaganza. Great seats are still available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com. Game time is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm.
