Honoring Taylor's Mark on Waterloo

Waterloo, Iowa-Tim Taylor became a Black Hawk during the autumn of 1963, returned to Boston in 1969, and left a legacy you can see every time a Waterloo youth hockey player takes his first step onto the ice.

Taylor will long be remembered for a career which included parts of four decades as an NCAA head coach or assistant, as well as helping to lead two Olympic squads and other service to USA Hockey. Before that and while he was still a senior player in the United States Hockey League, the former Harvard captain was a key figure in a city hockey program which has evolved into the Waterloo Youth Hockey Association of today.

The Black Hawks and Mike Molstead Motors in Charles City will recognize the resounding heritage of Taylor's efforts as a youth hockey coach, as well as those who make a positive impact on the Cedar Valley today, with a new program announced Thursday: Tim Taylor Legacy Seats, presented by Mike Molstead Motors.

"We are proud to honor the storied tradition of Black Hawks hockey through this partnership," said Molstead, a former goaltender in the Waterloo youth hockey program. "Furthermore we look forward to honoring the volunteers, mentors, and heroes that make the Cedar Valley such a special community."

Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley added that Taylor serves as a role model for anyone interested in making a positive impact on the lives of young people.

"Memories of Tim Taylor are very much alive here, and kids he coached have shared the game with their children, and their grandchildren, and now moving into a fourth generation. Hockey is vibrant in the Cedar Valley today because of Tim Taylor's efforts in the 1960s. I would like to thank Mike Molstead Motors for recognizing this special man and helping the Black Hawks to recognize many other special people in the coming year."

Anyone from northeast Iowa is invited to nominate a person - who embodies the spirit of Tim Taylor by making the community better - to sit in the Tim Taylor Legacy Seats during a 2016/17 Waterloo Black Hawks home game. Nominations will be accepted online at waterlooblackhawks.com. Selected recipients of the Tim Taylor Legacy Seats will also be featured on the Black Hawks' video scoreboard during the game they attend.

Taylor passed away in 2013. After playing for and serving as an assistant coach for Harvard, he left his mark on the Yale hockey program, winning 337 games at the school. Since 2014, the Tim Taylor Cup has been presented to the most outstanding player of the annual Harvard-Yale men's hockey game played in Boston.
