Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - Nothing went right for the Rochester Honkers on Wednesday night in a 20-3 beating at the hands of the Willmar Stinger in Willmar, MN.
With the loss, the Honkers suffer a three-game sweep of the first place Stingers.
Willmar started their hitting off with four straight singles off of Rochester starter Matt Kent (Texas A&M) in the bottom of the first to score two runs. Two throwing errors from center fielder Dakota Smith (Kansas) did not help the cause, and the Stingers had an early 2-0 lead.
The Stingers scored four more times in the bottom of the second on five hits and three more errors by the Honkers defense to make it a 6-0 lead.
Kent lasted just 4.0 innings in what was undoubtedly his least effective outing of the summer. The lefty allowed nine total runs (five earned) on 12 hits and a walk. With the defeat, Kent is now 3-5.
The Honkers got on the board in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by left fielder Justin Parr (Illinois), but in the bottom half of the frame, the Stingers responded thanks to a long three-run home run by Willmar second baseman Kenny Roberts (Alabama), and the lead was all of a sudden 12-1.
After the Rochester offense scored another run in the top of the sixth, the Stingers came right back and continued to pour it on. Before you knew it, the score was 20-2 after seven innings.
Jared Allen (Tennessee) hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to make it 20-3. The solo shot for Allen was his fifth of the season.
In the Honkers loss, Jordan Parr went 2 for 5 and Reid Roper went 1 for 3.
The Honkers (9-16, 24-36) travel to Waterloo on Thursday, August 2nd to take on the Bucks (11-13, 30-29) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Chris Noble (Pikeville) will start on the mound for Rochester against Waterloo righty Brock Hudgens (Charlotte). Noble is 2-4 in 12 outings with a 7.26 ERA. Hudgens is 4-2 with a 3.22 ERA in ten starts.
