Lancaster Stormers News Release

For 16 innings, the Barnstormers had gone without a home run at Bears and Eagles Stadium. Then, the dam burst.

Aaron Herr broke a 4-4 deadlock with a solo blast in the top of the eighth inning. Lloyd Turner slugged a grand slam, and Gerard Haran added a two-run shot in the ninth, and the Barnstormers put away an 11-5 victory to improve their second half record to 2-0.

It looked like the game might be a breeze early. Turner singled to start the game then raced all the way to third as first baseman Sandy Madera made a bad throw after Turner left too early. David Housel walked, and the Bears misfired again as starter Matt Melody bounced a pickoff throw past Madera, allowing Turner to score. L.j. Biermbaum drew a walk. Housel went to third on a fly ball to right by Herr and scored the second run on a sacrifice fly by Haran. Matt Watson scored Biernbaum on a double inside the first base bag.

The Barnstormers loaded the bases with nobody out in the third on walks to Housel and Herr around a single by Biernbaum. Mike Hrynio replaced Melody and got Haran to ground into a 6-4-3 double play scoring Housel. The offense went eerily silent until the eighth, and the Bears fought back.

Trey Hodges had a shutout into the fifth and appeared to be on his way to another scoreless inning when Jacque Jones smashed a two-out RBI single up the middle, scoring Tike Redman. Carl Everett cued a ground ball toward shortstop which was fielded by Turner who looked for a throw to second, but no one was home. Madera followed with a three-run homer to left, tying the game.

Herr connected against Corey Willey (1-1) on a 1-2 pitch putting Lancaster back into the lead. Former Detroit Tigers right-hander Chris Spurling was summoned for the ninth and immediately ran into trouble. He walked Ryan Mulhern, and Bryan Sabatella also reached when Spurling's throw to second on a sacrifice attempt was late. Michael Campbell drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases. Turner, after fighting off several 0-2 pitches, rocked one into the huge net behind the left field wall for the slam and a 9-4 lead. Spurling retired the next two hitters, but Herr singled and Haran, a former Bear, also found the net for an 11-4 cushion.

Eddie Camacho (3-2) finished the seventh and started the eighth for the Barnstormers, retiring three of four batters to earn the win.

The Barnstormers continue their extended road trip on Sunday afternoon with right-hander Ben Fritz (3-5) on the hill. Newark has not announced its starting pitcher. Lancaster will return home to face the York Revilution next Friday evening on Ag Dairy Night with fireworks following the game.
