Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 11, 2009) - Long Island Ducks team officials today announced the signing of outfielder George Lombard and pitcher Cory Doyne. The 33-year-old Lombard has enjoyed six stops in the Major Leagues with four different organizations (Braves, Tigers, Rays and Nationals), earning his first call-up in 1998 at the age of 22 with the Braves. The righthanded Doyne began the 2009 season with the Syracuse Chiefs (AAA, Nationals) compiling a 2-0 record in 10 games.
"George and Cory bring valuable experience to our team," says Ducks manager Gary Carter. "I am excited for their arrival and to pencil their names in my lineup card."
The Georgia native Lombard plays in his 16th season of professional baseball, first in the Atlantic League and first with the Ducks. The former big leaguer began the 2009 season with the Columbus Clippers (AAA, Indians), where he batted .368 with three doubles, four RBI and two stolen bases in eight games.
The outfielder played parts of eight seasons at the Triple-A level with the Braves, Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Nationals, Marlins and Indians organizations. He spent his early years in the Braves system, recording 10 or more home runs in a single season four times and swiping more than 20 bases six times. His best minor league season came in 1998 while playing for the Greenville Braves (AA, Braves) of the Southern League. That year he hit .308 with 22 home runs, 25 doubles, four triples, 35 stolen bases and 65 RBI in 122 games.
Doyne joins the Ducks for his first season in the Atlantic League. Last season, the Tampa resident split his time between four teams: Gulf Coast Orioles (RK), Aberdeen (A), Frederick (AA) and Norfolk (AAA) in the Orioles farm system. Doyne posted a 0-1 record with a 3.72 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 17 appearances between the four clubs. Prior to last season, the Florida native spent eight years in the minors toiling in the Astros, Padres, Cardinals and Orioles organizations, earning a call up to the Major Leagues on June 16, 2007. The former eighth round draft selection appeared in five games for the Orioles that season, pitching three and two-thirds innings, while striking out three. He has 29 career minor league victories with a 3.32 ERA in 586 innings pitched
