Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Defense was not the name of the game Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium as the Cedar Rapids Kernels and South Bend Silver Hawks combined for 12 runs, 26 hits and seven errors in front of 2,773 fans on the first Kernels Fireworks Saturday of the season. The Kernels also had their five game home winning streak broken as South Bend scored two runs in the top of the ninth to snatch a 7-5 victory from the Kernels.

South Bend tallied three runs in the first inning on two walks and three singles. The Kernels answered back with four runs in the bottom of the inning – Sean Rodriguez led off with a triple into the right field corner. He scored on a Nate Sutton sacrifice fly. Freddy Sandoval singled and moved to second on a Drew Toussaint single. Then, the Kernels tried a delayed double steal – Sandoval was safe at third and when Toussaint broke for second, the throw skipped off the second baseman's glove for an error and Sandoval scored from third. More Silver Hawk generosity in the form of two more errors, had the Kernels taking the lead, 4-3.

Cedar Rapids added one more in the bottom of the second as Sutton and Sandoval singled, Aaron Peel hit into a fielder's choice forcing Sutton out at third. Two wild pitches by Steven Jackson let Sandoval score from third to make the score 5-3.

Both starting pitchers did not figure in the final decision. Kernels starter Bill Edwards lasted just four innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking three and striking out only one. His counterpart, Steven Jackson, lasted five innings, but gave up eleven hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out one and walking no one.

South Bend tied the game in the fourth inning as Allen Mottram doubled and moved to third on an error by Michael Collins. A sac fly allowed Mottram to score from third and Mark Reynolds, who reached the Collins' error, scored on an Alexi Casilla fielding error.

The Kernels had plenty of chances to win the game, but just couldn't seem to push the go-ahead run across. Cedar Rapids stranded eleven runners and had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, but Sandoval flew out to center to end the inning.

Hipolito Guerrero (1-1) picked up the win in relief and Matt Elliott (S, 10) got the save. Nick Green (0-1) was the tough-luck loser in relief, pitching 4-1/3 innings of five hit baseball. Freddy Sandoval had three hits for the Kernels and Sean Rodriguez, Nate Sutton, Drew Toussaint, Michael Collins and Alexi Casilla all had two hits each.

The Kernels and Silver Hawks play game three of this four game series Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels welcome students from Madison Elementary to the game. Game time is 2 pm and the first 1,000 fans through the gates, when they open at 1 pm, will receive a free baseball cap, courtesy of Pat McGrath ChevyLand. It will also be a KDAT Sunday Family Fun Day – fans can take advantage of a special package that includes game ticket, concessions and more for just $9.75 per person.
