Kernels offer Memorial Day to remember

The Cedar Rapids Kernels will host the South Bend Silver Hawks on Monday, May 30th, for a special 2 p.m. Memorial Day matinee, but baseball won't be the only thing on the menu at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The zany antics of Birdzerk will be on display for all in attendance to see. The well-known mascot will make his only stop of the year at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday. Birdzerk's act has been a hit with fans of all ages from coast to coast and if they've never seen him before (or even if they have) they won't want to miss their only chance to do so.
In addition to Birdzerk entertaining Kernels fans the team will also open the Miller Mezzanine to the public. For $23.50 fans can get a ticket to the game and admission to the mezzanine where they can savor a ballpark-style all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of hot dogs, hamburgers, bratwurst, potato salad, and potato chips as well as soda and beer. Food and beverage will be served in the mezzanine until the seventh inning.
The Miller Mezzanine offers one of the best views of the action at Veterans Memorial Stadium as fans are perched high above the first base line with a bird's eye view the game below. The area is traditionally not open to the general public and is used for group events.
Those arriving at the ballpark early can take a minute to reflect on the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform throughout the years by walking through Veterans Memorial Park. The park, located just outside of Veterans Memorial Stadium, features monuments remembering past American conflicts and those who served.
Fans wishing to purchase tickets to Monday's game may do so by calling the Kernels ticket office any time after 10 a.m. tomorrow morning at 896-7560. They can also purchase tickets at the Cost Cutter's Box Office prior to the start of the game. Gates will open at 1 p.m.
