Wizards bury Whitecaps early

FORT WAYNE, IN - Josh Lee hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to cap a five run West Michigan rally, but that effort was offset by eight Fort Wayne runs in the third as the Wizards pulled off an 11-7 victory over the Whitecaps.

The slam was Lee's second home run of the season and the second grand slam of the year for the Whitecaps. The other was hit by Brooks Colvin at Fifth Third ballpark against Fort Wanye on May 14.

Joel Santo pitched eight innings for Fort Wayne and allowed just three hits, including a two-run homer by Nick McIntyre in the third. Santo gave way to Phil Polanco, who allowed all five Whitecap runs in the ninth on five hits and did not record an out. Polanco's ERA ballooned to 19.89.

Whitecaps starter Andrew Kown survived just 2.1 innings and allowed nine runs on eight hits and hit two batters in the third when the Wizards sent 12 batters to the plate. Dan Koncecny allowed the other run in the third as Fort Wayne moved in front, 10-0.

Tony Peralta gave up an unearned run in the sixth.

Fort Wayne's third inning was highlighted by a two-run homer from Brett Dowdy and a three-run blast by Lachlan Dale, who is second in the Midwest League with eight home runs.

Brian Friar scored twice in the third.

Dowdy had two hits and three RBI in the inning. He finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored.

Colt Morton put the Wizards on the board with a two-run double in the first.

The first five Whitecaps to bat in the ninth collected hits. Luis Sabino had an RBI single just before the grand slam.

Jonathan Ellis then came on to retire the last three West Michigan batters in order.

Memorial Day: The final game of the four game series will be Monday afternoon in Fort Wayne and West Michigan will try to take three-out-of-four. RHP Matt Righter (1-0, 2.87) will be on the mound for the Whitecaps against Wizards RHP Luke Steidlmayer (5-1, 1.53). First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
