Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (February 27)- There is no place like home for the Texas (37-12-5)Brahmas as they extended their home game winning streak to 14 games Friday night defeating the Amarillo Gorillas 5-3.
Scott Sheppard netted his team leading 30th goal of the season on Gorillas starter A.J. Bucchino four minutes into the game. Amarillo defensemen Warren Galloway and James Jernberg took simultaneous hooking penalties in which the Brahmas took advantage as Jason Deitsch took a pass from Jordan Cameron and Sheppard to put Texas up 2-0. Cameron's assist marked his 300th career point.
The Gorillas came back from the first intermission with intent to score, peppering Brahmas goaltender David Cacciola early in the second. A shot from former Brahma, Stuart MacRae found its way past Cacciola midway in the period to put the Gorillas within one. The goal did not discourage Sheppard in front of the soldout crowd at the NYTEX Sports Centre when he scored his second of the night on a 4-on-3 powerplay. Two minutes later a scramble in front of Bucchino's net turned into the Brahmas fourth goal of the night, this time from rookie forward Matt Burto from linemates Pete Rouleau and Tyler Skworchinski. Gorillas winger John Snowden retaliated with a goal of his own with :55 seconds remaining in the middle frame to end the period 4-2.
It seemed to be a night for ex-Brahmas when Mark Carragher beat former teammate David Cacciola to make it 4-3 Texas. Texas, who leads the league in shorthanded goals registered their 16th of the season with a goal that was highlight reel worthy by Burto, his second of the night. The tension between the teams grew in the final period, which eventually grew into a melee in front of the Brahmas bench. Nine penalties were called on play, four coming on Brahmas enforcer Nathan Saunders. In the end, Cacciola earned the Brahmas their 14th consecutive win at home, stopping 29 of 32 shots. With the victory, Texas continues to own the league's best record.
The Brahmas will travel to Louisiana to face the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Texas is 7-2 this season against the Mudbugs. All the action can be seen online free at: http://www.nifty-tv.com/chl/.
