Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif.-With the power of three home runs and a steady offense over the course of all nine innings, the Stockton Ports won their first game against the Modesto Nuts this season, 7-5. Jermaine Mitchell, Raul Padron and Matt Spencer all homered in the game, and Scott Hodsdon became the first Ports starter to win a game in an 11:05 a.m. contest on Wednesday.
The Ports matched a season-high with 12 hits, including a season-high five multi-base hits. Several players-Shane Keough, Matt Spencer, Frank Martinez and Jermaine Mitchell-also had multi-hit games on Wednesday.
Hodsdon worked 5.1 innings and allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits. Derrick Gordon and Justin Friend worked 1.2 scoreless innings, and Jon Hunton picked up his first save of the season, with a tough, 2.0 inning, three-strikeout performance.
The Ports were the first to get on the scoreboard, posting two runs in the first inning. Spencer was first to get on base, after being walked by Modesto starter Cory Riordan. Todd Johnson singled, and Raul Padron walked to load the bases. Martinez brought home Spencer with an RBI single. Johnson came around to score the second run off a throwing error by Maikol Gonzalez. Martinez was caught stealing, 2-6 on the play, to end the inning.
The Ports tacked on their third run to take a 3-0 lead in the second inning when an RBI single by left fielder Keough scored second baseman Larry Cobb.
The Nuts answered in the top of the third, as Brian Rike's single brought home left fielder Michael Mitchell.
A home run by Jermaine Mitchell in the fourth inning, and a two-run blast by Padron in the fifth allowed the Ports to pull ahead, 6-1. It was the first home run of the year for Stockton for both players. Mitchell finished the game 2x4, extending his hitting streak to a season-high eight games. His eight-game streak is also a team-high this season.
Modesto posted two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, chipping away at the Stockton lead, making it 6-5. All four runs were unearned, as they resulted from fielding errors. The Ports committed two errors in the top of the sixth and in the top of the seventh. The four errors in the game matched a season-high, last reached on April 18 against San Jose.
Spencer added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, launching his home run into the Jackson Rancheria Back Porch off Edgmer Escalona, to make the score 7-5. It was Spencer's fourth home run of the season. He had a three-game home run streak earlier in the season.
Hunton, despite giving up a leadoff single and a walk to the Nuts in the top of the ninth, was able to get out of the jam and pick up the save.
The Stockton Ports travel to Bakersfield to take on the Blaze in a four-game series from Thursday, April 23 to Sunday, April 26. Tomorrow, RHP Scott Mitchinson (0-0, 0.84) will face off against RHP Kennil Gomez (1-1, 1.80). The Ports will return home for a seven-game homestand starting Tuesday, April 28.
