San Jose Giants News Release
Brandon Crawford and Roger Kieschnick each hit home runs while Madison Bumgarner earned his third straight victory on the mound leading the San Jose Giants to an 8-1 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Wednesday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Crawford connected for his team-leading fourth homer of the season while Bumgarner fired five effective innings with just one run allowed before the Giants bullpen held Lake Elsinore scoreless over the final four frames. With the victory, San Jose won two-of-three games in the series and improved their record to 10-4.
Bumgarner surrendered five hits with no walks and five strikeouts during his 75-pitch outing. The left-hander has now won all three of his starts while possessing a 0.56 ERA through 16 innings.
The Giants quickly jumped in front with a single run in the bottom of the first inning against Lake Elsinore starting pitcher Jeremy McBryde. Darren Ford began the frame by getting hit by a pitch before stealing second with one out. Then with two outs, Posey lined a single off of the glove of Storm shortstop Lance Zawadzki and into shallow left center field to score Ford.
In the second, Kieschnick belted the first pitch of his at-bat high off the video board in deep right center field for a solo homer and a 2-0 San Jose advantage. The home run was Kieschnick's second of the season.
Bumgarner began his outing by retiring seven consecutive Storm hitters before running into trouble in the top of the third inning. With one out, Ali Solis singled before Danny Payne smoked an RBI double to deep right center field. The hit brought the Storm back to within 2-1 and was the first earned run that Bumgarner had allowed through 13 2/3 innings this season.
The Giants were silenced by McBryde as the right-hander struck out five over the third and fourth frames before Crawford went deep in the bottom of the fifth. Thomas Neal began the rally by drawing a one-out walk and then after Ford struck out, Crawford drove a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left center for an opposite field two-run homer.
Bumgarner allowed two singles in the top of the fourth, but pitched out of trouble by inducing Yefri Carvajal to ground into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play. The left-hander worked through a two-out single in the top of the fifth striking out Payne to end his outing.
Mitch Lively issued two walks in the sixth, but retired Carvajal on a ground out back to the mound ending the threat. Daniel Turpen entered the contest to begin the seventh and surrendered a leadoff single to Beamer Weems before Brad Chalk reached on a one-out error. After Chalk stole second, Lake Elsinore had runners at second and third with one out, but Turpen was still able to keep the Storm off the scoreboard when Payne flied out to shallow left and Andy Parrino struck out swinging.
The Giants broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Lake Elsinore reliever Chris Wilkes. With one out, Posey reached on an infield single before Conor Gillaspie drew a walk and Angel Villalona singled to load the bases. Kieschnick then delivered a sacrifice fly to right plating Posey for a 5-1 lead before Michael Ambort ripped a two-run single into right center field. Neal followed with an RBI double into the left field corner pushing the Giants advantage to 8-1.
Turpen and Edwin Quirarte combined to retire six consecutive Lake Elsinore hitters to finish the afternoon. Quirarte, who entered the game to start the ninth inning, struck out all three batters he faced.
