Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD - With home runs from Johnny Ruettiger, Trent Mummey, and Steve Bumbry, the Keys downed the Salem Red Sox by a score of 7-6 in front of 3,256 fans at Harry Grove Stadium.

The trio hit a combined five home runs in 177 games entering the contest, but were the deciding factor because of the three long balls they hit in the game which brought in a total of five runs.

Relief pitcher David Walters helped preserve the victory after entering the game with two runners in scoring position and two outs. He then struck out Sean Coyle to earn the game's final out, helping the Keys improve to 12-12 in the second half of the year and 39-55 overall.

Walters has now given up just one earned run since May 20th as his ERA has plummeted from 7.63 to 3.20.

The Keys are 9-4 against Salem this year after going 15-5 against the Red Sox last season. Salem falls to a league-worst 7-17 in the second half of the year.

The Keys trailed early after starter Tim Berry gave up three runs in the first - all with two outs.

Yet as Berry would settle in, the Keys would start to mount a comeback against Salem starter Brandon Workman.

After Justin Dalles singled in a run in the first, the Keys scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead thanks to home runs from Mummey and Bumbry.

With a one runner on and no outs, Mummey hit his fourth home run of the year to tie the score at three. Then with two outs and a runner on third, Bumbry would give the Keys a 5-3 lead when he hit his third home run of the year, a shot that went over the wall in right-center field.

After Salem scored a run in the fifth to draw within one, the Keys scored insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning to take a decisive 7-4 lead.

Ruettiger scored the first insurance run when he hit his first career home run in 96 games as a pro to put the Keys up 6-4, which was followed the next inning by a run in which Travis Adair scored on a wild pitch.

Although Salem scored twice to get within one and holding the go-ahead run in scoring position, Walters would close the door to make sure the Keys came home victorious.

The Keys will look to make it two in a row tomorrow against Salem as it will be two dollar Pepsi night as the new Pepsi Next product will be available at just two dollars to fans.

RHP Tyler Wilson (4-4, 3.31 ERA) will be on the mound for the Keys and he'll face RHP Miguel Celestino (6-5, 4.15 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM.
