Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - A tripping penalty called on Chiefs' defenseman Tyler King turned out to be the catalyst for a scoring outburst, but it was the Chiefs that capitalized on the penalty as WHL-leading scorer Mitch Holmberg punched in two shorthanded goals in under two minutes that ultimately carried Spokane to a 2-1 win over the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday night at the Arena.
The Chiefs would carry that 2-0 lead into the first intermission, but Saskatoon answered quickly after the break as right wing Brett Stovin beat goaltender Eric Williams just 1:01 into the second. Both teams exchanged chances and turnovers for the remainder of the period but were held off the board. Williams stopped 27 of 28 shots on the night.
The Chiefs power play unit stretched their scoreless streak to three games, as Spokane failed to capitalize on four power play chances. The Blades - the league's best power play unit at 28.1 percent - went 0-for-5 with the advantage, and gave up the two shorthanded goals. Both of Holmberg's goals were assisted by Liam Stewart.
Spokane hosts U.S. Division foe Seattle on Friday, December 6 at 7:05 p.m for UnitedHealthcare Awareness Night. The last time Seattle came to Spokane, the Thunderbirds handed the Chiefs their most lopsided loss of the season, 5-1.
Tickets for Wednesday night and all Chiefs home games are available in-person at the Chiefs' Ticket Office, over the phone at (509) 535-PUCK, via TicketsWest outlets and online at www.ticketswest.com.
