Hockey Celebrities Tee It Up at Griffins Youth Foundation Golf Classic

WHAT: The Grand Rapids Griffins Youth Foundation Ninth Annual Golf Classic. The event is the primary fundraiser for the foundation, whose mission is to expand the opportunities for participation in ice skating and related sports activities, and to encourage academic excellence, community involvement and healthy lifestyles among the youth of West Michigan.

The 2002 golf classic raised over $60,000 for the foundation.

WHEN: Monday, Aug. 25. Shotgun start at 11 a.m. Dinner, silent auction and live auction at approximately 5 p.m.

WHERE: Boulder Creek Golf Club, 5750 Brewer NE, Rockford

WHO: A total of 36 foursomes and fivesomes, consisting of more than 150 golfers, will participate. Players include local and national hockey personalities such as:

* Ken Morrow - A 1980 U.S. Olympic gold medalist and long-time New York Islander defenseman, he became the first player to win an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup in the same year. Native of Flint, Mich.

* Angela Ruggiero - A two-time medalist (gold 1998, silver 2002) as a defenseman on the U.S. Olympic Team, she was named Harvard's co-MVP as a junior in 2002-03. Native of Harper Woods, Mich.

* Griffins general manager Bob McNamara and head coach Danton Cole.

* Several Griffins players, including Michel Picard, Travis Richards and Ryan Barnes.

AUCTION: Dozens of unique items, ranging from sports memorabilia to goods and services from area merchants, will be available through both a silent and live auction during dinner. Items include:

* Private dinner and $2,000 shopping spree, provided by AK Rikk's Menswear.

* Sterling Watch from Hoffman Jewelers, valued at $1,200.

* Detroit Red Wings jerseys autographed by Brett Hull and Darren McCarty.

* Tickets to the Red Wings' 2003 Training Camp in Traverse City, Mich.

TICKETS: The golf event is sold out, but a limited number of tickets for the dinner and auctions will be on sale until Friday, Aug. 22. Tickets are $25 per individual and $40 per couple, while members of the Griffins Booster Club can purchase tickets for $20 per individual and $30 per couple.
