August 18, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND - San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed left wing Milan Michalek. Michalek was selected by San Jose in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are excited to have Milan join the Sharks organization and look forward to having him in training camp," said Wilson. "There is a reason we selected Milan at sixth overall in this year's draft. He has been successful with his experiences at several different levels of play, including playing for the Czech National Team and representing the Czech Republic in the World Junior and World Championship Tournaments. We feel he is ready to make the transition to professional hockey in North America. Like all of our draft picks in recent years, Milan's performance and merit on the ice will dictate where he plays this coming season."

Michalek, 18, scored eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) and 14 penalty minutes in 46 games with Budejovice in 2002-03. In addition, the six-foot-two, 205-pound forward scored one goal and two penalty minutes in four postseason games. In 2001-02, the native of Jindrichuv Hradec in the Czech Republic posted 17 points (6 goals, 11 assists) in 47 games with Budejovice. A member of the Czech Republic's national team at the 2002-03 World Junior Championships held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Michalek posted four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in six tournament games.

Ranked by NHL Central Scouting as the second overall European skater in both their mid-term and final rankings, Michalek is described as a good skater with an extremely high skill level. He is also known as a talented player with great moves, in addition to being a creative playmaker with good passing skills.

The Barons open up the season at home on October 11th at 7:05pm. Group tickets for the game are now available by calling the Barons ticket staff at 216-420-0000. Season Tickets and several Partial Plan Ticket Packages are available as well. More information can be found by Crashing The Net at www.clevelandbarons.net.
