Calgary, AB - Battling for the final playoff spot, the Calgary Hitmen secured a big win over the Medicine Hat Tigers at the Scotiabank Saddledome Wednesday night.
Calgary was off to a strong start with two back to back rebound goals from Blake Stevenson and Mason Finley. Medicine Hat cut the lead in half at the 16:07 mark with a tally from Andrew Basha, but the two goal lead was returned to Calgary by Cael Zimmerman within the last seconds of the first period.
Calgary held on to the 3-1 through 40 minutes of play until the third period when Owen McNeil found the back of the net at 4:09 into the third to come within one. Despite a late power play from Medicine Hat, Calgary was able to fend off the push and come out with the victory.
Calgary out shot Medicine Hat 39 - 28, with Ethan Buenaventura making 37 saves. Mason Finley earned third star of the game, while Blake Stevenson earned first star.
The Hitmen open a home-and-home set with the Broncos this coming weekend, making the trip to Swift Current on Friday, April 1 before the return match at Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday, April 3 at 2:00 p.m. It will be another Sunday Funday in the 'Dome featuring "Farley's Family Feast" with special $2 prices for cotton candy, water, pop, hot dogs and popcorn plus select $5 menu items including pizza and hamburgers.
