Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Prince Albert, Sask. - Carson Latimer scored both goals as the Prince Albert Raiders (25-32-4-1) knocked off the Brandon Wheat Kings (30-25-3-2) by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday night at the Art Hauser Centre.
The goals were the Ottawa Senators prospect's 15th and 16th goals of the season. He now has goals in back-to-back games.
With the win, the Raiders moved one point closer to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They now trail the Lethbridge Hurricanes by just three points for the final spot.
Latimer got the scoring started with 5:33 remaining in the opening period. Evan Herman came from behind the right post to try to jam it past Ethan Kruger. The rebound bounced to Latimer in the slot and he chopped it past the Wheat Kings netminder to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after, Tikhon Chaika kept the Raiders in the lead with a fantastic save on Brett Hyland. After the Wheat Kings forward made a move around a Raiders defender, he tried to tuck a backhanded attempt past Chaika. The Raiders goaltender was able to stick out his left pad to deny the chance.
Less than two minutes later, Latimer struck again. The Raiders controlled the zone on a power play late in the period. Vladislav Shilo's shot from the top of the right faceoff circle beat Kruger but found iron. The rebound came to Latimer at the bottom left faceoff circle and he quickly fired his second goal of the game past a sliding Kruger to put the Raiders up 2-0 after 20 minutes.
The Wheat Kings got on the board with 6:40 left in the middle frame. Charlie Elick's pass attempt from the right point to the left faceoff circle went off the skate of a Raider in front to catch Chaika off guard and make it a 2-1 game.
It was the only blemish on the night for Chaika. He turned aside 11 shots in the third period to preserve the lead. He was aided by some timely blocks as the Wheat Kings pulled Kruger for the extra attacker, including a sliding block by Evan Herman in the final seconds to wrap up the 2-1 win for the Raiders.
Chaika finished the game with 34 saves to pick up his 19th win of the season. Kruger made 24 saves in the loss.
The Raiders will host the Wheat Kings again on Friday night at the Art Hauser Centre. Game time is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at SaskTix.ca and at the Raiders Office.
