Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club today unveiled plans for the TELUS BE BRAVE Anti-Bullying Game.
This educational event will see the Hitmen host the Swift Current Broncos on Tuesday, Feb. 27 in an 11:00 a.m. start at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Over 14,000 Calgary and area students will be in attendance to learn about the importance of acceptance and bullying prevention from two guest speakers, concourse displays and in-game activities. Mackenzie Murphy, mental health and anti-bullying advocate, will speak in the first intermission while Tad Milmine, a constable with Calgary Police Service and founder of 'Bullying Ends Here', will address the crowd in the second intermission.
The game, in its second year, is sold out.
"We are extremely honoured to partner with TELUS on this incredible initiative. Our players, staff and fans recognize and are grateful for the opportunity we are provided to reach a significant number of youth in our city with an anti-bullying message," commented Hitmen Vice President Mike Moore. "We are also fortunate to have the commitment and participation of all Calgary and area school boards in making arrangements to attend the game."
"Cyberbullying is a significant issue for Canadian youth, with over 40% experiencing cyberbullying in the last four weeks alone. To combat this issue, the TELUS WISE program empowers both parents and kids with resources to help ensure that all are able to have a positive online experience," said Nimtaz Kanji, Director of TELUS WISE. "It is crucial that youth, parents and educators come together to rise above cyberbullying. Partnering with the Hitmen to host the BE BRAVE Anti-Bullying Game allows us to educate Calgary youth on the power of acceptance and kindness in both physical and online worlds."
First Intermission Speaker
Mackenzie Murphy, mental health and anti-bullying advocate. Growing up in Airdrie, Mackenzie experienced significant bullying and was the target of both in school and online attacks. Mackenzie's life was challenged and forever changed. Due to the experience she made waves in her community and opened the door for opportunity. She approached Airdrie city council with a proposed anti-bullying bylaw that not only would aid as a tool for the RCMP and provide a safety net for victims, but give support to the bully and help them with their mental health through court mandated counselling sessions.
Second Intermission Speaker
Tad Milmine is a constable with Calgary Police Service and founder of 'Bullying Ends Here'. Starting at the age of five, Tad suffered abuse and neglect at home and daily bullying at school. The trauma led to serious struggles with mental illness. What helped him get through his difficult years was his dream of being a police officer so that when he grew up, he could make a positive difference. As an adult Tad encountered others who had suffered from severe bullying. It was then that he decided it was time to make a difference and to offer help to those that need it most by creating the internationally recognized and award winning program called 'Bullying Ends Here'.
Both guest speakers are presented by A1 Chesney Service Experts.
