Hurricanes' Bellerive Named WHL On the Run Player of the Week
February 20, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Lethbridge Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive has been named WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending February 18, 2018.
Bellerive, a signed prospect of the Pittsburgh Penguins, registered 10 points (5G-5A) and a plus-six rating in five games as the Hurricanes continued their pursuit of the Central Division crown with four victories over the week.
In a 5-2 win against the Kootenay ICE, Bellerive opened his week with a goal and three points, picking up third star honours in the game. After picking up a single assist in a 6-3 loss to the Tri-City Americans, Bellerive helped the Hurricanes rebound with a goal and an assist Friday as they defeated the Saskatoon Blades 5-4.
Bellerive scored the opening goal 18 seconds into the game, then assisted on the game-winning goal in the third period to give the Hurricanes the one-goal victory.
Opening a home-and-home series with the ICE Saturday in southern Alberta, Bellerive once again played a big role in the victory, scoring a pair of goals, including the game-winner, in a 5-2 victory. For his efforts, Bellerive was named the second star of the game. A day later on the B.C. side of the border, Bellerive closed out his week with a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win, earning first star honours in the contest.
Overall, Bellerive finished with eight points (4G-4A) at even strength while two points (1G-1A) came on the power play. This week has helped Bellerive add to an impressive 83 points (42G-41A) in 58 games with 16 power-play goals and six game-winning goals. He sits sixth in the WHL for goals, eighth in WHL scoring and third in power play goals.
The 5-foot-11, 192-pound product of North Vancouver B.C. was originally selected by the Hurricanes in the first round, second overall, of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. Since then, Bellerive has played in 193 WHL regular season games, totaling 175 points (80G-95A), including 25 power-play goals, three short-handed goals and 14 game-winning goals.
Bellerive is the third different Hurricanes player to win the award after Dylan Cozens and Calen Addison previously captured the award.
Trailing the Medicine Hat Tigers by one point for the Central Division lead, the Hurricanes will begin a three-game home stand starting Wednesday, February 21 (7:00 p.m. MST) against the Prince Albert Raiders.
