Hillsboro Hops News Release
TONIGHT: The Hillsboro Hops travel to Salem-Keizer for the first game of a three-game set at Volcanoes Stadium in front of a large Independence Day crowd.
LAST NIGHT: Whew. In front of the largest crowd (5,205) in the two-year history of Ron Tonkin Field, the Hops bent but did not break in the top of the 9th. RHP Cody Geyer allowed a walk, two hits and two runs- albeit both unearned-but retired Everett's Chris Mariscal on a line drive to right for a 7-6 win. Hops SS Justin Gonzalez electrified the crowd with a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 7th, snapping a 4-4 tie.
FITTING THE SCRIPT: Last night's two-run 9th by Everett made it a one-run ballgame, which fits perfectly with the Hops' m.o.
Ten of the Hops' 21 games have been decided by one run, tied with Everett for most in the NWL (Hillsboro is 7-3 in those games and has the most one-run wins). 15 of the Hops' 21 games have been decided by 1 or 2 runs, the most in the NWL (Hillsboro is 10-5 in those games). In 2013, the Hops led the NWL in 1-run games with 27 (13-14).
POWER SUPPLY? The Hops have hit 7 HR in 20 games, 3rd-fewest in the NWL. With Todd Glaesmann's promotion to AA Mobile a week ago, only two current Hops have gone yard: SS Justin Gonzalez (4) and LF Grant Heyman (2).
HANGIN' IN, HANGIN' ON: The Hops are winning despite a sometimes-shaky bullpen. From the 1st-6th innings, the Hops are out- scoring their opponents 70-35. From the 7th-9th innings, opponents are out-scoring the Hops 42-18.
(Thanks to @SteveCallaway2 for this fact.) The Hops' 3.11 ERA is 2nd in the league, but their starters ERA is just 2.36 (the bullpen's ERA is 4.21).

INF Pedro Ruiz is 4 for last 8 w/3 2B after 2x29 slump... C Elvin Soto is 12 for his last 25, but has K'd 5 of last 6 AB... RHP Nick Baker has retired 43 of 52 hitters, with 0bb, 8h, 1 batter reaching on E... LHP Zac Curtis allowed just 4 of the first 21 hitters to reach base (1bb, 3h) over his first 5+ games as a pro; over last 2+ games, 9 of the last 15 hitters have reached base (5bb, 4h)... RHP Cody Geyer had retired 16 of the last 17 batters to face him, with 0h, 1bb and 6k, before allowing 4 of final 6 to reach base on Thu vs Evt (did squeak out save)...
RHP Dustin Loggins allowed 3r in 1.2 ip in his 1st affiliated-ball outing (Op. Night in EVT); since then is 1-0, 0.00, 8.2ip, 8h, 0r, 3bb, 16k.
VS. SALEM-KEIZER: The Hops took 2 of 3 from the Volcanoes in the opening series at Ron Tonkin Field this year... in the Hops' home opener, S-K erased a 5-0, 1st-inn deficit for an 8-6 win... the Hops then won 4-3 and 2-1, the latter on a 9th-inning walkoff single by Elvin Soto... The Hops went 2-4 at S-K last year, and they're 5-10 in two seasons vs. Volcanoes.
