Winston-Salem Dash News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA (JULY 3, 2012) - The Lynchburg Hillcats walked off with a 3-2, 13-inning victory over the Dash in the rubber match of a three-game series Tuesday night at Calvin Falwell Field.
After Dash (5-8, 49-33-1) pitching had stranded three runners in the extra frames, Terance Marin (3-2) could not strand one more. Bobby Stevens banged out a one-out, hustle double, and he came around on David Rohm's double off the wall in left to propel Lynchburg (7-6, 46-37) to the come-from-behind victory.
These two clubs went to extra innings in large part due to solid pitching. Winston-Salem starter Justin Collop blanked the Hillcats over six and two-thirds innings, which matches a season high. Collop allowed just three hits and struck out four during his third quality start in six tries as a rotation member.
Lynchburg starter Chris Masters kept the Dash off the scoreboard during his six-inning effort. Masters scattered two hits and struck out five against a Winston-Salem squad that normally hits lefties well. Entering play Tuesday, the Dash were 14-5 when a southpaw started for their opponent.
After mustering only three runners against Masters, the Dash struck first in the seventh inning when Cyle Hankerd played tag with the scoreboard in left-center field for his eighth homer in 22 games. Winston added to its advantage on a Carlos Sanchez sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth.
However, Adam Milligan knotted the score with one swing of the bat in the home half of the eighth. Milligan hit a towering two-run homer beyond the boards in right to tie the contest.
Winston-Salem would never lead again, as the Dash only mustered two hits from the ninth inning until the end of the contest. Winston's lone legitimate scoring chance came in the top of the 13th when Ross Wilson led off with a single and reached second on a sacrifice. However, Wilson would not advance past second base.
The Dash return home for a six-game homestand beginning with Wednesday's Fourth of July celebration at BB&T Ballpark. There will be a post-game fireworks show Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Tickets are still available, so call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 to secure your seats.
Winston-Salem sends Jake Petricka (4-4, 5.07 ERA) to the mound Wednesday night at 7:00 against Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans counter with fellow right-hander Randol Rojas (6-1, 2.39 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 on wsdash.com.
