Lynchburg, VA - Despite holding a 3-1 edge halfway home, the Keys dropped the 2016 finale at Calvin Falwell Field 4-3 to Lynchburg on Thursday night. Frederick returns home with a split of the four-game series.

The Hillcats scored the game-winning run in the sixth against Keys reliever Garrett Cleavinger. Luigi Rodriguez singled and Taylor Murphy rapped his second double of the night to put two in scoring position. With no outs, Cleavinger (0-1) walked Mark Mathias to load the bases and then issued a five-pitch walk to Paul Hendrix to bring home Rodriguez. Cleavinger would work through the frame without allowing any more runs, but the Keys gathered just one hit in their final three trips to the plate.

Frederick scored in the first inning for the fourth consecutive game. Erick Salcedo singled against Justus Sheffield, while D.J. Stewart followed with a base hit. Wynston Sawyer cracked a double to left to plate Salcedo, but the Keys left two in scoring position.

Lynchburg evened things up in the home first against Lucas Long. Greg Allen tripled off the right field fence and Tyler Krieger bounced a double to right field. The 'Cats also stranded two on the bags.

Sheffield struck out four of his next seven outs, but Jonah Heim gave the Keys a 2-1 lead with a solo shot in the fourth, his sixth of the season. In the fifth, Anthony Caronia pushed a bunt single and Salcedo drilled a two-bagger down the left field line for a two-run advantage.

Long couldn't keep the Hillcats at bay in the bottom of the fifth. Juan De La Cruz singled with one out, while Allen walked. Krieger gathered his second RBI to score De La Cruz, while Yu-Cheng-Chang lifted a sacrifice fly to score Allen to tie it at three. Long gave up three runs in five innings on seven hits, while he struck out six.

Matt Whitehouse tossed two scoreless in relief of Sheffield. The Hillcats starter lasted five frames, allowed six hits, three runs, walked one, and struck out eight. Whitehouse (1-1) escaped a first and second, one-out jam in the sixth. Cameron Hill retired all six he faced for his second save.

The Keys return home to Nymeo Field on Friday to face off against Winston-Salem for a four-game set. RHP David Richardson (2-2, 3.42) goes for the Keys against Dash RHP Thad Lowry (6-5, 3.62). The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
