
Brault Makes Big League Debut on Tuesday

Frederick, Md. -The list of former Frederick Keys to the Major Leagues grew to 148 on Tuesday night, as Steven Brault made his Major League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates. A member of the Keys in 2014, the left-hander became the second ex-Key in three days to pitch in his first big league game. On Sunday, Ariel Miranda, worked two innings of relief for the Orioles against Seattle. In addition to Brault and Miranda, Ty Kelly (Mets) and Ashur Tolliver (Orioles) have also gotten their first taste of the Major Leagues this season.
Brault, 24, made the start for Pittsburgh against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Tossing four innings, he gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits to go with two walks and five strikeouts in a no-decision. Additionally, Brault recorded his for Major League hit, a single to center off Cardinals starter Mike Leake. On Wednesday, Brault was optioned back to Triple-A.
Before joining Pittsburgh, the Californian was 2-3 with a 2.31 ERA over nine minor league starts between Triple-A Indianapolis and Short-Season West Virginia. A majority of those outings came in the International league with Indianapolis where he was 2-3 with a 2.57 ERA in eight games.
Originally selected by the Orioles in the 11th round of the 2013 draft out of Regis University, Brault was acquired by the Pirates as the player to be named later in a deal for Travis Snider. Sent to Pittsburgh in February 2015, the southpaw split last season between Advanced-A Bradenton and Double-A Altoona. In 28 combined starts, he went 13-4 with a 2.43 ERA. He finished second among all Pittsburgh minor leaguers in strikeouts (125) and tied for second in wins.
Promoted to the Keys at the end of the 2014 season, Brault made three starts for the orange and black going 2-0 with a 0.55 ERA (16.1 IP/1ER). After an outstanding debut start against Carolina, Brault was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week.
The Keys conclude their four-game series against the Lynchburg Hillcats on Thursday night. Right-hander Lucas Long (4-5, 4.85) starts for the Keys against Hillcats southpaw Justus Sheffield (6-4, 3.81). First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m from Calvin Falwell Field and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
