Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 8, 2014) - It was everything an exhibition game should be: one team bats 10 guys, then goes down to nine in the middle of the game, lots of offense, a few errors and following a homer in the bottom of the ninth inning that won the game, the game continued. All in a day's work as the St. Paul Saints got a solo homer by Joey Becker in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 12-11 at Midway Stadium in front of 2,190 Twin Cities area school kids.
Becker finished the game 2-4, but his big blow came as the lead-off man in the bottom of the ninth when he deposited a Drew Bowlin pitch over the left field wall.
The Saints trailed 7-3 going into the bottom of the fifth and put up a seven spot. Evan Bigley led off the inning with an infield single. He moved to second on a single by Henry Wrigley. After a fly out sent Bigley to third, he scored on a passed ball and Wrigley took second. Willie Cabrera walked and with two outs Becker made it 7-5 with an RBI single. Carlos Escobar followed with an RBI single to make it 7-6. Brandon Wikoff walked and Buddy Sosnoskie reached on an error allowing Becker to score tying the game at seven. Bigley untied it with a bases clearing double to give the Saints a 10-7 lead.
The RedHawks tied it in their next at bat with an RBI infield single by Anthony Kaskadden and a two-run double from Ronnie Bourquin. The former Saints finished the game 3-3 with three RBI.
Songco's sacrifice fly gave the Saints an 11-10 lead in the bottom of the sixth only to see the RedHawks tie it in the eighth on an RBI double from Kaskadden.
Brandon Tripp collected three hits for the Saints including a two-run homer. Bigley, Wrigley and Becker each collected two hits with Bigley driving in three.
The RedHawks were led by Travis Higgs who went 3-3 with two RBI and four runs scored.
The Saints, RedHawks and Minneapolis Cobras play the Three-Way at Midway, the XXXhibition game on Friday evening beginning at 7:05 p.m. The game will be 12 innings with the Saints and RedHawks playing against each other in the first six innings, followed by the RedHawks and Cobras for three and finally the Saints and Cobras for the final three.
