March 14, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa-Irish Night at the Mystique Community Ice Center brought the Fighting Saints no luck Friday. After stringing together a few wins, the Dubuque Fighting Saints failed to keep the momentum going in Friday's game as they fell to the Des Moines Buccaneers 4-1 in front of 2,543 fans. Des Moines beat Dubuque for the first time since November 26, 2011 and were aided by two goals and an assist from Brendan Shane.
Des Moines also got a key performance from a new face. Affiliate list goaltender Leif Hertz got his first USHL start in goal and shut down the Fighting Saints. Hertz stopped 26 shots to earn his first USHL win. The right-handed catching goaltender was particularly strong in period two when Dubuque peppered him with 16 shots.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a two-goal lead with a pair of tallies in the game's opening period. Shane scored a highlight reel goal at 10:23 to open the scoring. Patrick Grasso fed Shane who walked around a pair of Dubuque defenders and fired a shot past Fighting Saints goaltender Ben Johansson to make it 1-0. Jake Jackson also assisted.
Another new face made his impact felt for Des Moines late in the first period. In his first USHL game, defender Nicky Wolff scored his first USHL goal, snapping a long-range wrist shot past a screened Johansson to make it 2-0 with only 33 seconds left in the period.
Dubuque looked to switch the momentum in the second period with an early goal from Karson Kuhlman. Dubuque's Josh Elmes broke up a Des Moines offensive rush and fired the puck out of the zone off the boards. It bounced to Kuhlman who raced in on Hertz on a breakaway. Kuhlman made a forehand, backhand move, roofing the puck over Hertz's glove to make it 2-1 at 1:36 of the middle period.
In the third period, Dubuque was never able to tie the game. Hertz shut the door and his team responded with a pair of goals. Shane scored his second of the game at 8:46, knocking in a rebound off a blocked Alec Rauhauser shot. Danny Elser added the final goal for Des Moines, scoring at 14:28 on a quick shot that beat Johansson.
Dubuque outshot Des Moines 27-25 on the evening but fell to 30-17-4. Cedar Rapids topped Team USA Friday night to move within one point of Dubuque in the USHL's Eastern Conference standings.
Dubuque travels to Waterloo for a Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup matchup at the Young Arena tomorrow night. Puck drop is 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM.
