Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Sioux City Musketeers came back during a shootout after rallying during regulation Friday at Young Arena, topping the Waterloo Black Hawks, 5-4.

After 65 minutes concluded with no advantage, Peter Krieger converted the Hawks' first shootout attempt. It remained the only goal during the tie-breaker, until Avery Peterson scored in the third round, then affiliate forward Brock Boeser wristed a low shot into the net during the sixth round, yielding the victory for the visitors.

In the first period, the Black Hawks had lived up to their reputation as the USHL's best power play team. Just 4:25 into the game, Mark Friedman sent a shot off the glove of Collin Olson and into the net during an advantage. Then in the in the closing minutes before intermission, Waterloo converted consecutive five-on-three power plays. Patrick Russell slipped a shot through traffic at 18:14. Ninety-six seconds later, Tyler Sheehy struck from close range with just 9.9 seconds showing on the clock.

Much of the second period was just as one-sided, but in favor of the visitors. During a power play Brandon Hawkins blasted a one-timer into the net from the high slot at 1:52. Cedric Lacroix scored 34 seconds later, slipping the disk over the goal line. Play was stopped, and after initially being ruled "no goal," the call was reversed. The Musketeers then tied the game at 7:39 when Jared Thomas knocked in a rebound.

Liam Pecararo reestablished a Black Hawks lead at 19:22 of the second, showing great patience, cutting across the slot, and firing a shot low to the stick side of Kyle Hayton. At the start of the period, Hayton had come on in relief of Olson. However, Waterloo could not protect their slimmer lead, and Trevor Olson retied the game with 6:06 to play in the third. Olson's shot to the top corner came after the Hawks were pinned in their own zone for a long stretch against Sioux City's starting line.

Saturday night, the Black Hawks are back in action on home ice for a Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup contest against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Good seats still remain for the Highway 20 rivalry game which begins at 7:05 p.m. For more information, visit waterlooblackhawks.com or call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
