Hershey rallies to finish off Rats, 6-3

HERSHEY rallied from an early deficit Sunday to defeat the Albany River Rats 6-3 at GIANT Center. The win was the fifth straight against the Rats this season, and the 18th straight dating back to 2004.

Albany opened the scoring just 27 seconds into the game when Cody McLeod scored his second goal of the season. The goal came off a rebound chance when Dave Gove lifted a chance on goal and Maxime Daigneault. The BEARS rebounded to score three straight to wrap up the period, with Dave Steckel opening things with his 12th goal of the season at 4:23. Quintin Laing then scored his ninth goal of the season from Jeff Schultz at 5:11 to give HERSHEY the lead, and Alexandre Giroux scored his 30th of the year on the power play at 16:24. The BEARS outshot the Rats 8-6 in the first period and took a 3-1 lead into the dressing room.

The Rats fought their way back into the game with a pair of goals to begin the second. Mike Angelides pulled the Rats back within one early in the second period with his second goal of the season. The marker at 8:28 from Michael Vernace and Ben Guite pulled the Rats within one before Ben Guite tied the game with a short-handed goal at 13:44. Steckel then scored his second of the game and 13th of the season at 15:12 to give the BEARS a 4-3 lead heading into the third period. HERSHEY would add two third period tallies, one from Eric Fehr at 9:42, and one into an empty net by Laing at 19:15 to finish it off. Daigneault won his 12th game of the season, making 21 saves.

Notes: Goaltender Justin Peters was pulled after 16:24 of the first period, allowing three goals on five shots. For the second straight game, the BEARS had six different players miss the game due to injury. Dean Arsene, Matt Hendricks, Trevor Byrne, Sasha Pokulok, Pete Vandermeer and Chad Wiseman all missed the contest due to various injuries. Linesman Aaron Lundbohm arrived late for the game after his car suffered a flat tire on the PA Turnpike on the way to the game.
