Inland Empire 66ers News Release

San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers (50-54, 18-16) had a no hitter broken up in the seventh inning, but still held the High Desert Mavericks (44-60, 12-22) to seven hits and won the game by a final score of 4-3.

In front of 4,896 on Angels Flashback Cap Giveaway night, the 66ers got on the scoreboard early on an RBI groundout from Eric Oliver. 66ers shortstop, Dwayne Bailey, came in to score on the play after he had singled earlier in the inning and advanced to third base on two stolen bases.

They added to their lead in the second inning when Jose Jimenez and Jon Karcich both reached base to lead off the inning. After a Brian Hernandez strikeout, Matt Long hit a bloop-single to centerfield to load the bases. Dwayne Bailey then singled sharply into the hole at short which brought home Jimenez from third. Jon Karcich came around to score as well after a throwing error by Mavericks shortstop, Shaver Hansen. Long rounded out the scoring for the 66ers in the second when Kole Calhoun hit an RBI single to left field.

The 66ers wouldn't need much more support from the offense as the pitching was stellar all night long. Johnny Hellweg (3-4, 4.48 ERA) gave, undoubtedly, his best pitching performance of the 2011 season as he went five strong innings allowing no runs and no hits while striking out eight along the way. Hellweg talked about his night on the mound.

"I was able to help put my team in a spot to win and I battled and got the job done."

While Hellweg was outstanding, the 66ers pitching staff had a no-hitter going through six and one-third innings before Mavericks third baseman, Steven Proscia, broke up the no-no when he hit a double to centerfield in the seventh. Caleb Graham, Eric Cendejas, and Mike Kenney came on in relief for Hellweg and had to avoid a scare in the ninth inning as Cendejas and Kenney surrendered three runs before Kenny was able to eventually get his third save of the season.

The 66ers head to High Desert tomorrow for a one game series with the Mavericks. The scheduled starters are Ariel Pena (9-3, 4.05 ERA) for Inland Empire opposite Kenn Kasparek (0-1, 7.71 ERA) of High Desert. The 66ers then return home a day later on Sunday to host the San Jose Giants who own the best record in the Cal League.
