ABBOTSFORD BC - The Abbotsford Heat played just two games this past week in AHL action out in the Fraser Valley, and after a pair of wins over North Division rivals, the Lake Erie Monsters, the Heat have moved closer to clinching a Calder Cup playoff berth.
On Friday night, David Shantz was stellar in goal, stopping 38 of 40 shots as the Abbotsford Heat edged the Lake Erie Monsters 3-2 in the shootout on Friday night in the Fraser Valley. David Van der Gulik and Radek Smolenak scored for the Heat in the win, while Brett Sutter and Garth Murray added goals in the shootout to preserve the win.
On Saturday afternoon, Jason Jaffray scored three second period goals for lead the Heat to a 5-3 win over the Monsters. Garth Murray and Staffan Kronwall would also score in the victory.
With the wins, the Heat stays in a tie for 2nd place in the North Division with the Rochester Americans. The Heat are now 34-25-4-6 on the season, six points clear of 4th place Manitoba and now 11 points ahead of the 5th place Monsters.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Heat will face two North Division rivals again this week, with both games on the road. On Saturday, the Heat will face the Lake Erie Monsters for their third straight appearance against their Ohio rivals. The Heat owns a 4-1 record this season against Lake Erie, their best record against any team in the Division.
On Sunday, the Heat will take on the Toronto Marlies in a game that can be seen nationally on the CBC at 10 am PDT. The Heat lead the series with the Marlies, having posted a 4-1-0-1 record versus their Toronto counterparts this season. The CBC game marks the first time this season that the HEAT will appear on live television.
With his three goals on Saturday, Jason Jaffray continues to lead the HEAT with 25 goals, 29 assists, 54 points and a plus minus rating of +25. The Heat defence is scoring by committee, with Keith Seabrook (24 points), newcomer Andy Delmore (22 points) and Staffan Kronwall (22 points) leading the charge. The goaltending tandem of David Shantz and Leland Irving also have similar numbers, with Irving posting 13 wins, a 2.74 GAA and a save percentage of.907, while Shantz has been the hotter of the two goalies, posting 11 wins, a 2.80 GAA and a.908 save percentage.
