October 12, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release

ABBOTSFORD BC -The season is now under way and the Abbotsford Heat have had a successful start to the season. This past week, the Heat opened on the road to begin season two, and came away 2-1 on their three game road trip with wins in Grand Rapids and Toronto, while taking their first loss of the season in Milwaukee.

HEAT HOT SHOT OF THE WEEK

Carter Bancks - This 21 year old rookie had quite the week. Bancks scored the first goal of the Heat season and set up the game tying goal in the Heat's 3-2 shootout win over the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday. The following evening, this Marysville, BC product helped open the scoring once again for Abbotsford, setting up Greg Nemisz for a shorthanded goal to put the Heat up 1-0. On Monday afternoon in Toronto, Bancks set up Matt Keith for the game opening tally, his third game in a row where he factored in the opening goal of the game for the HEAT, and also set up Nemisz again for his second shorthanded goal of the season in the Heat's 3-2 victory over the Toronto Marlies.

All totaled, Carter Bancks scored one goal and four assists, good for five points and a SHARE of the AHL SCORING LEAD! `The word quit is not in his vocabulary,' comments Heat Head coach Jim Playfair. `Every shift, he hustles. Every shift, he is making smart plays, finishing checks and being accountable. This young man has had a nice start.'

HOT SCORERS

While Bancks has been in on five of the Heat's seven goals so far this season, others have also stepped up. As mentioned, rookie Greg Nemisz scored two shorthanded goals in his first three games in the AHLthis also leads the AHL. Cam Cunning from Powell River BC and Matt Keith from Aldergrove BC are also off to nice starts, as they have put two goals on the board each. Cunning's second goal of the season was the game winner in the Heat's win in Toronto. Kris Chucko of Burnaby, BC, scored the shootout winner in the Heat's victory over Grand Rapids.

THE ROCKFORD FILES

The Rockford Ice Hogs make their only appearance to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre this weekend, which also marks the Heat's home opening weekend. The only BC player on the Ice Hogs this season is the highly regarded Kyle Beach from Kelowna BC. In this market, Beach was the player that the Vancouver Canucks were supposed to take. Beach is a BC boy and a power forward that remind many people of Cam Neely. Instead of the Canucks taking the sure fan favorite and the BC product, the Heat chose Cody Hodgson and the comparisons have always been made.

Beach led the WHL in goals with 52 last season and was a line mate of current Heat forward Mitch Wahl.

All games will be broadcast on Country 107.1 FM this season. Dave Sheldon will call the play by play, while Craig MacEwen will supply the color analysis on select home games.

Broadcast schedule:
