Phantoms Lose at Wilkes-Barre 2-1
October 12, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
Wilkes-Barre, PA - Zac Rinaldo gave the Phantoms the initial lead less than a minute into the game but it would turn out to be the only goal Adirondack would score in a 2-1 loss at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Tuesday night.
Rinaldo drove to the net on an apparent Penguins' defensive breakdown as Greg Moore dug the puck away in the corner to stake the Phantoms to the early 1-0 lead. Stefan Legein also assisted on the tally. The Penguins' Tim Wallace and Joe Vitale would score late in the first and early in the second for the comeback.
For the 20 year old Rinaldo, it was his second goal of the season tying him with Patrick Maroon for the team lead after three games.
Johan Backlund had another terrific game in net to thwart the Penguins attack turning away 32 of the 34 shots he faced. Perhaps the biggest stars of the game were the Phantoms' penalty killers who hustled and battled their way through 10 Pens power plays including multiple 5-on-3's while holding Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to just 1-for-10. Adirondack has held the opposition to 1-for-17 on the power play in the last two games.
John Curry was solid on the Penguins' end in getting the win and the Penguins defensive corps got in the shooting lanes to block several other Adiroindack drives.
The Phantoms went 0-for-6 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton outshot Adirondack 34-24.
Adirondack finished their season opening three game road trip with a 1-2-0 record. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton improved to 2-0-0. The game was the first of eight meetings on the year between the East Division rivals. The next matchup is Friday, October 29 at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Adirondack's first home games of the 2010-11 regular season, presented by Bud Light, will be Friday, October 15th and Saturday, October 16th. The Opening Night game is presented by Potvin & Potvin Family Dentistry and Nemer Ford and the first 5000 fans will receive Phantoms magnet schedule frames courtesy of Potvin & Potvin Family Dentistry.
