Springfield Cardinals News Release

Trey Hearne became the Texas League's first nine-game winner, pitching into the eighth inning on Monday night, as the Springfield Cardinals downed the Midland RockHounds by a score of 2-1 at Hammons Field.

Hearne carried a shutout into the eighth inning, leaving after a one-out walk and 98 total pitches. Eduardo Sanchez came into the game, trying to hold on to a 2-0 lead. Sanchez was greeted by an RBI triple off the bat of Archie Gilbert, as center fielder Jim Rapoport dove after a ball that ended up going all the way to the wall. Matt Sultentic scored all the way from first base to make it a one-run game. Sanchez buckled down and struck out both Josh Horton and Chris Carter to preserve the lead.

In the ninth, Francisco Samuel got some good defensive help to keep the Cards in front. Matt Spencer opened the inning with a single down the left-field line. Left fielder Antone DeJesus played it perfectly off the wall in foul territory, gunning down Spencer at second base for the first out. Adrian Cardenas followed with an infield hit, but was stranded at second base, as the next two hitters grounded out to end the game, giving Samuel his 20th save of the year.

The Cards got their only two runs in the fifth inning, when Pete Kozma singled to open the inning, then moved to third on a double by Shane Peterson. Midland starter Graham Godfrey (7-5) gave up a sac fly to Tony Cruz and then an RBI single to Tyler Henley, as Springfield took a 2-0 advantage.

Hearne (9-1) allowed just one run on three hits over 7 1/3 innings, striking out five, while issuing three walks.

Henley finished the game 3-for-4, while Peterson and Mike Folli each had two hits.

The Redbirds (6-5 Second Half, 44-37 Overall) look for the three-game sweep over Midland on Tuesday night, sending Brandon Dickson (5-5) to the hill against RockHounds left-hander Daniel Haigwood (1-0). Tuesday night is a Kraft Singles Tuesday Night Tickets promotional night, as fans are encouraged to bring a Kraft Singles Package Wrapper for a "buy-one-get-one" ticket to Tuesday's game. Game time is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm.
