SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH LUCHI GONZALEZ
On working around national team callups ahead of Saturday's match:
"We are going to be missing some really important players who have played an important role in our team's ability to compete. A month and a half ago, we went through something similar. We need to have a next-man-up mentality. Our roster will be tested, and we're going to continue to analyze the different options we have. The group is competing really well. You can tell guys are seeing potential opportunities, and we believe in them stepping up. It is an exciting opportunity to show our team depth and our variability in the roster."
On the possibility of a Quakes player selected to the 2023 MLS All-Star roster:
"That would be fantastic. We would welcome as many guys as possible to be considered and given that opportunity. It is a representation and a reflection of all of us and the daily work we are doing. It is a representation of their teammates, the staff, the club, and what we're trying to do on and off the field. How we want to act and how we play. I would welcome as many of our members as possible given that opportunity.
On defender Tanner Beason's performance this season:
"Tanner Beason really stepped it up. He didn't get starts early in the season, but he got opportunities in preseason. We knew he's a guy we could count on. Jona [Jonathan Mensah] and Rodri [Rodrigues] were getting the business done and we wanted to show consistency in the lineups. In the situation where Tanner got the opportunity, he's certainly grabbed it and has shown he's a very good center back in our league. He's done well for the team."
